What symptoms have you guys had w/ VSS problems?? Surging idle?? My 96 Disco seems to "hunt" around while at highway speeds. Take foot off gas RPM drops then goes up, then down again. Doesn't feel like the torque convertor. I also have a surging once the truck starts moving. Stopped, idles just fine...take foot off brake trucks takes off. I should probably just replace it anyway??

My 97 Disco had a V.S.S. problem. When I was driving at HWY speeds the acceleration would cut in and out. It didnt do this at normal city speeds, just when I was on the HWY. I replaced my V.S.S and the problem left. It was a very simple replace. Took 15 mins.

A bad speed sensor typically will intermittently send double pulses to the computer and speedometer at highway speeds. So you'll be driving along at 60 and suddenly the ECU gets a signal that you are going 120, which causes it to shut the fuel injectors on one side of the motor off to reduce your speed. Then the truck slows down, and the sensor starts working again, and the symptom goes away.

So basically it doesn't have a thing to do with an idle??

Yeah i had that pulsing feeling when i am coasting along. i thought it was my torque converter locking and unlocking, but hen i replaced my idle bypass thingy and it went away.

some say to clean it, i have found that doesnt last and you end up with the problem a month later.

after installing the new one it took a few days for it to "find itself" and idle well again.

now it's nice and smooth like babies ass.

If your V.S.S. is bad will it cause a shimmy after a hard acceleration then letting off the gas?

I replaced my VSS recently. I was experiencing the same symptoms at highway speeds- stuttering and going back to normal after releasing the accelerator. Put in a new VSS and all symptoms have gone away. It took a little longer than fifteen minutes for me because it is really sandwiched in next to the parking brake drum. You really need small hands! :-)

Rob - What year is your truck?? 96 or Newer?? If so where did you get the IAS motor. Believe it or not I can't find one anywhere. I ordered one from the Roverconnection & they sent me one for a 95, totally different.
