Very common problem from what I hear. I have a 99 Disco 1 SD and have the all to familiar rust on the inside of the rear door wells. Should be covered under warranty by LRNA for 6 years from the in service date.

96 DI and both rear door jambs at that valley where the pillar meets the fender are rusted, will fix soon, no warranty.

I'm being told it nots covered because it is not on a "panel" its on a seem. If anybody has had it fixed under warrenty, and they feel like giving me thier case reference numbers, I would greatly appreciate it. I plan on going at this full on.

will land rover make good on earlier model Discovries. ie. My 1996 Disco 1? It's clearly out of the original warrenty and the dealership warrenty is out as well.

many of the dealers require you to keep your records up to date. ie. LR requires you have your truck inspected for rust every year.
if this is not done they can and will deny you.
LR should cover it if it within warranty. i have heard that most times they will if your inspections were followed and the truck was still within its 7 year corrosion time period.

From what I understand the warranty IS a 6 year corrosion warranty. I have a '95 with the same problem and haven't addressed it because I wanted to figure out a way for this to not happen again. Clearly a design flaw! Water gets trapped in there and doesn't drain properly. Any ideas???

Hi
The real problem is where aluminium and steel are together, i.e. around the rear door skin, this will always corrode when it gets damp,as a small battery is formed and aluminium being less noble becomes sacrificial.
Unless you can insulate them from each other this will always happen.
bummer eh!

Does the 10 year paint warranty not count here? It is a painted portion of the car...lol

The corrosion you speak of is not covered. My 94 Disco had a great deal of corrosion fixed under the warranty a few years ago, and this area was not covered.

Maybe in Arizona.

My 96 SD has the rust in both spots. The passenger side has surface rust. But on the drivers side ther is a big hole. I plan on fixing it later this year. I saw a 96 SD that was shipped in from the west coast at a local dealer.(I am in northern NY) There was absolutely no rust, but it looked like the truck has never been off the pavement. Too bad for that.

I bought my 98 disco off some people who obviously never took it off road, and the paint back there was just a little flaky. I put some touch up paint, but that is just temporary. Can i go to a dealership to get it fixed, or will they charge me?

Hi Guys,
I just went through the wringer with both the dealership and LRNA over rust repair on my tailgate. I'm the second owner of this 99 DII and even though the PO maintained her perfectly, my claim was denied due to the fact that I was the 2nd owner and that the rust had not "perforated" the skin. Actually, the rusty area was about the size of a quarter and the paint was clearly bubbling. I'd sure like to fight this further, but since there's only one LR dealer in town ... I sure hate to get off on the wrong foot with the service manager. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Very common. I have a 97 that had the same problem. I took it to a local body shop around a 200 dollar fix.

when you guys feel so inclined, take your front wing panels off, and have a look as I think that there is a body shell part that is very prone to rust. I have identical rust spots on mine on both sides, which is a sign to me that it could be widespread and common.

here are some pics....

Two years ago, my 96 Discovery began showing rust at that same spot in both rear door pillers. I took it to the dealer in Kansas City. They told we is was not officially covered under the 6 year rust warranty, but they arranged for it to be repaired (ie, sanded and painted over) at no charge because I had bought the vehicle there and had had regular maintenance done there. Now, the rust is showing again. I'm sure the body shop did only cosmetic work back then.

My question now: what can be done to truly repair rust in an area such as this? In fact, I'm concerned that rust is now showing up in a few other areas, such as around the alpine windows and on the floor underneath the rear carpet. Discovered this when I had to change the fuel pump last month.

I have it in the same spot on my 94 and my 95...

I also have some on the other usual spots: The rear cargo door hinges and the alpine window seam weld...

Had my 95 sand blasted and painted in the same spot two years ago. Less than $200 to fix. It is a design flaw as previously stated (steel meeting alum.) and cannot be helped. IMHO for less than $200, I wouldnt cheese off the people at a dealer. You might need them in your corner for something bigger in the future.

Had my 96 D1 repaired under warranty a couple of years ago. Had no problem other than the time it took.
