I am interested in purchasing a 2000 Discovery II and had some basic questions?

1} Is it recommended to get the 100K warranty from Landrover?

2}I know what I'm geeting into in terms of oil leaks etc but on the whole is Discovery a reliable vechile.

2}I am looking to get one with about 30-35k miles on it and plan to drive around 8k a year in the NH winter. Is the Discovery prone to a lot of rusting?

3}How does the Disco compare to the Mercedes ML320 in reliability and performance?

4}Anyone have any feedback on Bear Valley landrover in GA?

All help would be deeply appreciated.

I've a 2000 D2. No rust, no leaks, not problems whatsoever. I've done all the maintenance. I 've got 46K on it and will likely opt for an extended warranty soon.

Hope this helps.

I just bought an off-lease 2000 D2 and, so far, I'm happy with it. It is still under warranty, so I took it to the LR dealership (Atlanta - Buckhead LR) and they were very pleasant about fixing the few things I needed. I did the one unpleasant surprise of needing new brake pads all around (about $470), but I am working that out with the place I purchased the car.

In the time I was looking for a LR, I did visit Bear Valley one time. According to their website, many people are happy with their service. I can't say I have a lot of experience with them. I know they seem to sell a lot of LRs to people all over the country, but I didn't get a great customer service "vibe" from them when I was there. They did not seem at all interested in negotiating on purchase price or staying in touch with me in case a suitable vehicle came into their inventory. One of the owners told me (rather flippantly), "Come back when you are serious about buying a Land Rover." Needless to say, I was serious. I just thought, given the current soft economy, it might have been in his best interest to be even a little flexible on his pricing strategy. If he was that kind of a jerk *before* I handed over any $, I wasn't encouraged by what I could expect *after* I was locked into a purchase. Maybe he was just having a bad day (or maybe not). I decided to spend my money elsewhere.

BTW, Bear Valley like a lot of other pre-owned LR dealers, get many of their cars from LR/BMW Finance Corp. as end-of-lease returns. If you know someone in the used car business, they may be able to get you into the auction (they have several around the country - there's a big one in S. Atlanta). It's wholesale only, but some dealers will escort you in and act as your agent to bid on a specific vehicle for a commission of a few hundred $. Although I didn't go this route, my DII came from this auction by way of a small dealership in Lexington, KY. Hope this helps.

Karl,

That is interesting about Bear Valley. I have been lurking on their website looking for another Rover.

My 2001 DII has been very reliable. No leaks or major problems. My only gripes have been some interior trim related issues. I have 29K miles on it. FWIW.

My 99 DII has been a gem. Land Rover Northpoint in Norht Atlanta(Alphareta) is fantastic. Mike Jones is a great guy and has been very helpfull in ever dealing I have had. Most of my issues have been for things that any other manufacturer would not have fixed anyway. IE.. faded trim pieces, vibrating speakers etc.. LR just replaced parts no questions asked. As for the extended warranty well you can look at all the posts from people with aftermarket warranty issues and judge for yourself. Any 2000 DII will be certified and thus have 12/12 additional warranty. I would spend the money and extend it as far as I could. Although I have had no big issues the cost of any major repair is going to be over a thousand dollars so for me the extended warranty is well woth it. I do not have any experience with Bear Vally, but if you buy from a LR dealer you get free loaner and a certified truck. The re-sale is so bad on a Disco that you are going to save a heap of cash anyway. Just my two cents--Matt

My 2001 DII has also been very reliable. Bought it from dealer w/ 15K miles came with 4 yr warranty and free maint. Only issue I had was leaking around year windows and they replaced the gaskets no charge.
