Paul - what happened to the D1 that was ahead of you on that snow covered climb. Did he keep going and if so did he have any traction aids/better tyres in use; I am keen to know because it looks like a good comparrison, especially if the D1 has no aids and has CDL locked (as a minimum I would have thought).

Cheers mate.

Okay #1, please don't shout. I am sensitive! HA!

If you compared a D1 to a D2 right out of the showroom with no mods whatsover, the D1 kicks ass. Just last weekend, Jeff Conrad navigated his D1 through a series of severly muddy climbs and twisty off-camber decsents; making it through every obstacle on a set of stock Michelins.

I learned early on that ETC was useless on a climbing trail that is covered with a layer of ice and snow on top of that. So I turned off the truck and summoned the CDL fairy to come out and bless my D2. :-)

In my opinion, tires was an important factor out there. Those with street type tires fought harder than those with MT whatever else. But, the #1 factor was momentum. Once you lost momentum, the snow / ice / mud mixture combined with gravity will bring anyone to a stop very quickly.

Here's a pic of a D1 going over some snow covered rocks:

And here's a same Pic of the Pig going over the same thing:

The difference between the two is tires and momentum.

Scott, there was a good mix of vehicles that participated in that trip. There were a couple of Rangies, D1's, D2's, D-90's, and a Land Cruiser. All of these vehicles exhibited strengths and weaknesses when compared to one another. Now matter how much crap people do to their vehicles, it still comes down to skill. For the record, I am a super novice. For a trip report go to:

thanks very much mate - that is very interesting. We dont get much snow in Queensland, but comparrison would be valid for climbs involving muddy slopes, which we do have plently of.

Cheers

Paul - I take it that once the CDL was engaged that you then had more success?

Yes Scott,

In those conditions with snow ice and mud, CDL and momentum was key. ETC could would not allow the D2 to gain momentum by its pulsing of the brakes.

Now let me throw a curve ball at you. This last Thursday night a D1 blew a rear diff on a very muddy rocky trail. I first made the attempt to two him out with CDL engaged. But when I attempted to drive onto a log bridge I couldn't get up it. I disengaged CDL and reactivated ETC and the rest of the trail was cake from then out. The "yawing" motion that the Pulsing of the brakes caused allowed me to hop up onto the bridge and the rest of the muddy rises. Whereas with snow and ice, there is not a gripping point for your tires. The point I am trying to bring out here is that with a D2, you can configure the vehicle to match the situation. But then again, when all else fails, there's the winch. :-)

I would love to have the chance to drive a G-wagon or a real Humvee to see how you can change configurations with all those buttons on the dash.

Um , "Changing configurations" ?? LOL Thats what we like to call "driving the bitch" Paul.... Relying on buttons and magic just makes you more vunerable..

You are absolutely right Kyle, especially for those 10000 mile round trips you guys pull to go out West. But sometimes it's fun to relax and play with technology than run from it. When I said earlier that, "I would love to have the chance to drive a G-wagon or a real Humvee to see how you can change configurations with all those buttons on the dash." I didn't mean buy one, maybe just have one for the day to experiment with. Anyone want to loan me a G or an Hummer for a day? :-)
