Getting a lot of different views on this topic. Have used Castrol 20w50 for many of my previous vehicles. Maybe someone likes something else for their Land Rover. Thanks in advance for the info.

I thought a heavier weight was better for these engines and I was also told that synthetic oil is more likely to leak. What particular brand do you use ?

I think viscosity is somewhat relitive to how many miles are on the engine and the climate, ie hot, cold, winter, summer.

The newer engines with their tighter bearing tolerances seam to be moving to the lighter (5w ??) end of the stick

Yes it leaks more, but you would be amazed at the amount of crap synthetic cleans out (had to change filters every 1000 miles for about 3-4 filters when I first switched after first getting the truck).

I use mobil 1 in the summer (Target $3.59 quart) but I had some 5w-50 Castrol in winter (forgot cost, had it a while). My next change (in 2500 miles, I know I have issues) will be 5w40 rotella synthetic ($12.84 a gallon at Wal-mart). Basically I buy the cheapest full synthetic I can find.

In Alyssa's truck (which had a recent top end rebuild and was very well maintained since new) I use mobil 1 5w-30 in winter and 10w-40 in summer. If I still lived in buffalo I might even go to 0w30 or 0w40 in winter.

I have heard good thing about the new BMW formulations 5w60, 0w50 --- available from jobbers only but used in things like the M3 and 03 RR, maybe I will try it if the price drops.

Heres a goofy question but, whitch mobile one oil you all use?
At the local Autozone there is about 4 or so differnt kinds, all they say is stuff like "New Engin", or "Light Truck"
So whats the diff?

Jesse,

As far as I know, there's only one Mobil 1 oil with the differences being viscosity. Mobil 1 has 5W-30 marketed for "newer vehicles", 0W-40 for "European cars", 15W-50 for "performance cars", and so on.

See here for the difference:

I've used Mobil 1 in the past on turbocharged engines, but not the Disco yet. The Disco got Castrol Syntec 5W-50 at its last oil change. (It was what the dealer had on stock.)

Heres my two cents. I have been informed by a few venders that BG Hi-LoW30 fully synthetic oil, which translates to a 0W30 weight, is the way to go. BG claims this to be the most shear stable polymer available. This flows immediately to lub all your vitals down to a chilly 50 degrees below zero. Although pricey, approx. $45.00 a gallon, BG recomends a drain life of 15k. I'm using this now and changing filters every 5k. Truely great up North however not certain how this reacts to hotter temps.
See Ya....

Works very well to keep engine clean of sludge but, if you have never used it before, be prepared to change oil and filter within first 500 miles. It will loosen up alot of sludge.

While this thread may be more about oil, I wondered if anyone has had success with Lucas products (lubricant additives, not the electrical stuff mind you).
I have seen those white bottles with blue letters available for transmissions, engines and fuel, but don't know if it's snake oil or not.

Thanks, Brad

Lucas HD: Yeah, I do. I've been using it in an 83 533i (260K) gearbox, diff and engine; 93 Mazda Protege (160K, orig clutch!) engine, trans-axle for about 6-9 months now.

Results:

- Screaming rear diff in bimmer is now quiet
- Oil consumption in bimmer has gone from about a quart every 500 miles to about a quart per 1000 miles (I'm thinking valve guides and rings here as the engine is very clean)
- Notchy and loud transaxle on the Mazda is now quieter and smoother

I just got a "SIIa" (50K on the engine/drivetrain) a few weeks ago, changed out all the fluids and used a little Lucas everywhere. The OD was pretty loud, now it's much quieter. Seems the gearbox is much easier to deal with now. Not sure if it's the Lucas or not, but the left side front hub was pretty leaky, I've kept them both locked and driven a 100 miles or so and now it's not leaking any more.

Only place I've used it on the D2 is the diffs.

YMMV.
