Do you guys in the US come accross many Toyota Landcruisers on your trails - I assume you do. They are big over here. I trust that you show them up! The early live axel cruisers were pretty bloody competent with heaps of aftermarket's available. I have no love for them - they drive like/finished like trucks and yet are no tougher in terms of suspension than Discos. Just curious

I have never seen any of the "vintage" fj's. All i see are the new ones with some soccer mom aboard. Pisses me off!

There are plenty of Cruisers on the trails. Many surpass the Discovery in many ways unfortunately. Vintage FJ's are all over the place. Look at all the Discos out there...soccer moms galore! They give Discos a bad name.

My brother has one, an FJ-62. When trail driving it does pretty good - not that it has been really challenged or anything - but just by way of comparison, I believe my Discovery could beat it off-road all things equal (and stock) - but only just barely, and only in a few categories. Overall reliability of the Toyota is better, but quality compared to price is probably better in the Land Rover. Pretty good for a stock '89 leaf spring truck...

The Landcruisers are by far the best for off roading for an SUV (aside the Disco of course :-) ). I was really up in the air on which to buy before I got my Disco. Being 6'4" the Disco weighed out with it's roominess, luxury items, and abilities.

I just recently sold my beloved 1984 FJ-60. 245,000 miles, never rebuilt.... NOTHING! Just routine maintenence is all she ever asked of me...the slut! LOL, She was a large rig off road but never ever left me wanting more. Always had a love affair with the LR badge though so broke down last year and bought my D2. Used the funds from the sale of the LC to buy goodies for the LR. We all move on I guess.....

Had an FJ-40 about 10 yrs ago.....thing was virtually unstoppable. Stick it in 4-Lo, pop it into 1st, and the thing was like a stomper. This past year at Mohawk, we had an FJ on the trail with us. The SWB was great in some of the tight quarters. Overall, did as well as most of the TJ's that were there.

George, remember the orange FJ from That Road? That thing made it over every obstacle without a tug. Put me to shame...

We have plans to do a full restoration on it starting soon.

Over here they have a reputation for durability - notoriously trouble-free. It's also very hard (in my experience) to find older ones for sale, and they seem to retain their value better than Land Rovers.

But every time I've gotten into a Toyota, I've really disliked it!

*Caveat... never been off-road in one.

**>They are big over here

They are even bigger over here... when you try to park them in one of our cramped 'compact' parking spaces!

Dave,

Sweet....Keep me and RJ in mind when you start. We both had '40's in our younger years....would be GREAT to see one all restored!

I have to say that I have a bit of "Curiser Envy". My main wheeling partner drives an 84 FJ-60. Its lifted, locked, and we are very close to completing a V-8 conversion. After over 200,000 miles, its original 2F engine is finally getting a little weak. They may ride really stiff, but they are the ultimate in reliablility.

Like I said, they are sweet trucks. But I agree - I actually don't like driving them. I sat in the new 4Runner, which has an impressive set-up for a mid-level SUV, but instantly could not stand sitting in it. Would hate driving it every day. And I just don't like driving my brother's truck that much either.

Again what I don't like about Toyotas is their lack of leg and head room. My family are Toyota-holics since the Supra and the 4Runner came out in 87 so I've had my share of them, and I can say that the interior space and design is the only reason I would not buy one (besides the fact that they are the most common cars in the world).

I have to agree, I just do not like sitting in any Toyota. I am not quite sure what it is but I do not like it.

Hmmm, My FJ62 has more interior room than my D2 and much better visibility out the sides and especially out the back. Road manners and ride quality, well D2 hands down. Its more comfy than my couch. Best off pavement, my FJ40.

Here in Dubai where Dunes Safaris are offered by so many Tourism companies they only use Land Cruiser won't even think of the Rovers. If you are driving rover here they think you're a cheap 4 wheelers. The price of let say 1997 disco is only rangin from 4k to 6k US. Whereas same model of LC would still cost around 18k to 22k. Also spare parts for LC is flooded here, dirt cheap compare to LR were so difficult to find and expensive.

I had a '77 FJ-40 and I absolutely loved it! NEVER broke down, could climb over ANYTHING, and got tons of attention! I love my disco I but I'd buy a BJ-40 and mod it out way before I'd put down the GROSS amount of money they get for a Defender 90!!! Completely overpriced!!! You could buy a BJ-40, swap out for heavy duty birdsfield 60 axles, swap out the tub for an aluminum one, do a spring over lift, put 35's on beadlocks, ARB's front and rear, Full Exterior cage, Dual Recaro seats, five point seatbelts, etc. finish it off with a custom paint job, and STILL have a boat load of money left over to get a nice softail or whatever other toys you like!!! Ridiculous! Oh man I miss my lil TOY!!!

I had a 73 FJ-40 many years ago. Loved that truck. It did break down from time to time but it was something fixable on the road (used a safety pin and duct tape to fix a busted throttle linkage one time 300 miles from home....it was 4 months before I bothered to buy a new one).
It was also nice in the summer to take the top and doors off. Then drop the windshield when doing easy 4xing/camping.

Plus with all that room under the hood (original in-line 6) it was easy to work on.

Hey Paul,

Nothing thrown from this end. I LOVE the old series trucks, but then again I love alot of older trucks. I've dreamed of owning a '77 Bronco and I love old Scouts! My point was simply that though Defender 90's are good trucks they're just an updated version of an old design. Stock they're very capable but WAY overpriced! I've seen them go for as much as 40K for a mid 90's truck with over 50k on the odometer. I just don't think it's worth it.

John,
NO argument here on the high price of Defenders, thats why I like the Series.
