I've posted about this before and had some help (thanks guys) but it has happened one more time. When I attempt to turn it over (all lights, beeps, bells come on when I turn key to I and II positions) the entire electrical system shuts down.

Through process of elimination, I have narrowed it down to a bad ground of some sorts and something to do with the alarm system / ignition kill switch. This has happened 3 times in the past 2 months. To remedy the problem (temporarily) I arm the system (locking the doors with the key and waiting for alarm light to blink) and then disarm (unlock). By doing this it has somehow reset everything and it starts right up afterwards.

This last time, however, the doors wouldn't lock at all (no juice). So I let it sit for about 24 hours. During this time (about 10 hours from when it initially happened) I walked by it several times in the garage and heard a funny noise. It was a pulsing sound coming from under the shifter housing. kind of like a click then a hum, click and hum, and so on. When I opened the door it stopped. I held in the dome light door pin and it started again (the dome light was not lighting up just as before). I rolled under the rig and couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from but it was very high up into where the shifter plugs into the transmission.

The next day I went out to check on it and opened the door and lights came on and no wierd sound. It started right up...

This is somewhat boggling. I can't seem to find anyone that has even remotely encountered this. Does anyone have any ideas? It's very much appreciated...

Sounds like the alarm itself or the alarm computer is not actaully grounded correctly, or that it has a flaw. Like a lot of the problems with the cruise controls, you just have to replace that little black box - where ever it is.

...this type of thing happened to my uncle when he bought his 4.6 RR. He loved it, but needed it to be reliable since he lived some 300 miles from the nearest LR shop and owned 40,000 acres on which he often "roughed" it through the fields to get the farm job of the day done. Anyway, for the first 6 months he constantly was getting stranded. Locked in his car, electrical shut down, locked out of his car, no start, no shut off, no stopping alarm, etc... it turned out to be a loose connector - broken. $50.00 and his truck now has over 300k on it with no other problems since. Yes, Land Rovers are actually reliable! Once you talk it out of them.

either that or go get a priest...

Out demons!! I haven't had any mechanical problems, just electrical. Funny you mention the CC. Mine hasn't worked since last summer. Checked the hoses and vac pump - just fine. Probably the "black box" in both cases. I just recently ordered a shop manual so I should be digging in here soon to see what the probelm is.

Every time this happens the rig is in the garage. Just pray I don't get stranded in the mean time...

Anyone know where I should look for loose grounds at? I'm pretty sure this is the problem but without the Electrical wiring diagram I don't know where to start. I checked the obvious locations like the battery but where else?? I ran the OBDII reader on it following the diagnostics routine (driving while someone else checks codes) but the same codes come up (P1509 - Idle speed control short circuit fault).

Help!!
