I was just diagnosed with a bad rear main seal and bad steering box! Yeah!!! Question is, can a bad rear main seal cause a loss of power? I've been experiencing a loss of power for about a month. It's a 99D1 with 60k miles. I just replaced the oil cooler lines (after LR said they were leaking when I took it for the 60k svc).
Thanks

Rear main seals ALWAYS leak - unless they are really bad - leave them alone - it's a very spendy job to R&R.

No - it would not be related to loss of power.

Can a RMS just let go? I'm scared that I may be driving and it will let go stranding me or causing engine damage.
Thanks Bill

correct me if I'm wrong, but you will not "blow out" your rear main. You just lose the complete seal and drip drip drip like the rest of us. I know it's frustrating, but imagine your frustration when you spend umpteen hundreds of dollars & time tearing all that shit apart to replace the seal, and then the next day it's drip drip drip all over again :-)

I don't think your power loss could be attributed to a bad rear main. How are your valves feeling these days?

Valves feel great considering v-job at 36k courtesy of LR. It's funny, I'm udnerneath the truck a lot looking lately. I changed the oil cooler lines myself. I seem to never see the PROBLEMS/LEAKS that LR sees. Maybe they're trying to recoup the valve job money from me. My steering box is leaking but only slow. Not even dripping. Go figure. I guess I'm the typical worrier. It's my only mode of transportation. I guess I need to accept the truth and understand that I own a LR. I'm glad you guys are here for help. I would have paid nearly $800 for the oil lines if not. Funny thing is, I've experimented by placing old floor mats under my truck as well as parking on an orange tarp. NO LEAKS. EVER. Except for the ones that will develop today after making that statement.

Good God Man! Delete that post while there's still time, or you'll start leaking for sure. You have 1 hour.

Rear main seal is comprised of 2 crucifix seals and also an oil seal. There is no way to "blow out" the seals really.

Seriously - most of the Rover V8's leak -as Blue said even after replacing. Mine was done twice while still under warranty and it still leaks now (2 yrs later).

So, whatever happens, it shouldn't be catastrophic?

Rear main seals do not "blow out". They just leak, and gradually get worse. There is no hazard to driving with a leaking seal.

The original seals were cork, and they shrank.. All have failed or will fail. The replacements are rubber, and they should last longer. We have learned to change them with the engine and trans in the vehicle.
