Yes, I know this subject has been talked about a lot, but for the first time I have seen an "official" statement about side angles in modern Land Rovers: From the May '03 LR Owener Inter.: The max side angle allowed in a Defender 90 is 40 degrees. This is tested in a static environment - off road it would be different. Then, they say that the instruction manual for the D-90 says only 30 degrees - this makes sense because people tend to do whatever the instruction manual says you can do, so it sheilds LR from lawsuits.

Anyway... before I got my roof rack and new 2" suspension, I had taken my Disco off-road up to 30 degrees, and didn't feel danger - it made me go REALLY slow and CAREFUL, but it felt pretty solid as long as I didn't hit a bump or something. Now that I have the lift and the roof rack... ??? I suppose I should not push it past 20 without a spotter and some careful walking over the area to be traveled to make sure it isn't slippery or bumpy. Any thoughts from people who have had experience?? And am I just missing something or does the handbook for the Discovery NOT say anything about max side angle?

Two years ago - Before I knew what the heck I was doing I did slide sideways in soft dirt about 3 feet (all four wheels) and I had read just enough to know that I should not freeze up, but instead turned down hill and drove out of it - probably saved me from a roll-over.

Having rolled a Disco, I can say that they will go a long way before they finally topple. How far? I don't know as I don't have one of those nifty little gauges. I don't even have an idea as my last thought before coming to a very gentle stop was "I really don't want to put my hand out to try to push the ground away".

The biggest concern I had was starving the engine of oil, but I immediately had folks pulling the truck back and apprently that was enough tokeep the oil where it needed to be.

It was a very disturbing feeling to look out the driver's window and see the mirror stuck in the dirt and the horizon where it didn't belong when looking out the windscreen.

Peace,
Paul

That is pretty good, on a hill too! I would think that planning ahead would help. Have some idiot stand on the opposite side bumper if he thinks he can jump off in time. Or loop your tow rope through the rack and to a tree, or to a few guys off to the side to provide just a little extra pressure up hill - every bit counts...

I definatly missed that part! Yea I would like to go soon, but once schools out i will have no problem. I just don't want to do anything too extreme and mess up the body since I am going to be getting rid of it in about 6 months for a d-90.
