Just wondering if you guys really have to have GPS trackers installed in all your cars like I heard on the local news today?? They want to know how many miles you drive so they can charge your insurance and taxes based on that, right? They are thinking of doing the same thing in Oregon. If they do, it would be the start of my first offical try at civil disobediance. The government has no business knowing and being able to record EXACTLY where I have been or am. Remember, those things are more than 90% accurate within 3 meters anywhere on the globe. I would seriously be willing to go to court over this one. They are not putting one in my car. http://landrover.mrbaileyshistory.net |

I have heard about that, but I doubt it will last. I read a while ago about rental car compaines putting those on their cars and when you went 10mph over the speed limit I think they would charge you or something like that. But as I believe the courts said it was illegal, and an invasion of privacy. Marcel |

Haven't heard a thing about it. Besides, it would be illegal anyway. |

Good. I heard it on the news this morning. The insurance companies are able to bill you based on your credit report. If it is bad, they can bill you more. They had an example of two people who drove basically the same cars with the same driving records - nothing - but one had twice the insurance bill because she has 5 credit cards, etc... So the legislature is making it so that is illegal in Oregon. Which is good. But a stupider politician is now coming up with this brilliant idea to put GPS into all the cars in the state so they can track the mileage and bill you on your insurance AND tax you for the miles you put on the road! I heard that they were using Texas as an example... but I guess they were wrong. |

From what I know of it, Texas seems an unlikely state to pilot that kind of privacy invasion... |

insurance companies do have the right to charge you for the miles you drive each year. This is part of the underwriting process--if soneone drives more than another person the likelihood of an accidnet increases. However, that is far differnt from having the right to know where a person goes. Also, insurance companies don't have the right to tell their clients how to spend their hard-earned dollar--if a company tried to tell anyone in any state that a GPS was required before a policy was issued, the company would be run out to the State. Sorry, the reporter got it wrong. DougC...a proud Texan who remains GPS-less |

To expound on Doug's post, Texas was the first state to permit per-mile insurance in Jan. of '02. Here's a supporting link: http://www.tdi.state.tx.us/commish/nr01232a.html As far as required GPS in Texas: No. |

Paying based on actual use makes a lot of sense. Since we have 3 vehicles and only 2 drivers, at least on vehicle is always idled. It would be nice to have a pool of insured mileage that you could use on any of your vehicles. |

I agree about the payment, or partial payment, based on mileage. And it is good to hear that they are not trying the GPS thing anywhere - especially Texas. But they are talking about it in Oregon....... I would be perfectly willing to show them my mileage every year though. |

As a Houstonian I can say without a doubt that it would NOT go over well. I've never heard of such an outragous thing! Hell half the time I don't even know where I've been! |
