Guys, I can barely shift my 5-speed. Bought new fluid - not sure if that will help - too damned cold to change it right now anyway. Regardless - feels like the syncro's are off. 1996 Disco 5 spd. petro. Anyone go through this before?

Worn synchros would usually manifest by hard shifting into some gears not all (keyword is usually).

Not being able to shift at all could be other things. Warn, broken linkage (although that would make it loose), worn/broken and jammed shift rail, jammed shifter, worn or bent throughout fork or bearing or anything that would cause the clutch to not disengage fully. Again keyword being "could".

If it was working fine till now and gradually became hard to shift over period of few days, I'd bet on the fork/bearing, clutch disengagement thing.

Sorry for not being able to be more specific. Hopefully someone else will chime in.

Shot Master or Slave. Get someone to go under the truck and see if the slave is fully moving, alternatively try pumping the clutch to see if the situation improves.

Synchro failure usually shows up as very difficult to get into second and sometimes third and is usually progressive rather than sudden.

If you need any R380 help email me

I guess I forgot as part of disengagement what Ron mentioned. Thanks for catching that Ron.

Its easy to forget rovers use hydraulics for clutch disengagement (unlike american stuff which usually uses linkage or some sorts).

Well my Ford has mechanical linkage but the Heep's got master-slave hydro. So I should have remembered. BTW, how does the hydro feel on the Disco when it goes? On the Heep the pedal travel first got notchy and coarse.

IF the slave goes, the pedal will go to the floor. If the Clutch wears it will not disengage until the pedal hits the floor.

So if the hydralics are full, I bet the clutch is about to start slipping

Figured.
I replaced the slave - had a guy do it for $50 and bought it off Nathan Crabtree of Discount Rovers for cheap money. that was back in Dec. when it was -27 degrees in mornings here in the NH Seacoast. I'll at least try the fluid. I think its the fork linkage. That bent in my Tercel when I was a kid - then speed-shifting I snapped the gear case right off the bottom of the vehicle and it was an inch from the ground!
1) Syncros - worth paying to replace or get whole new gearcase? (dealer only or AAMCO)?
2) New gearcase $$$? - should I jump off a high section of Bridge off i-95?
