The Daily Auto Insider Ford to Scrap Lincoln Blackwood April 3, 2002 Page 1 of 1 Ford will end production of its Lincoln Blackwood luxury pickup truck at the end of this year, say press reports. Only 379 of the $50,000-plus pickups have been sold since its introduction in November. Ford originally had hoped to sell 6,000 Blackwoods last year and 12,000 in 2002. Meanwhile, Cadillac has sold 2,236 of its Cadillac Escalade EXT, the SUV-pickup it rushed out after Ford announced plans for the Blackwood. Cadillac officials expect to sell 12,000 to 15,000 of the trucks a year. Industry analyst Art Spinella, head of Bandon, Oregon-based, industry tracking firm CNW Marketing Research was quoted by Reuters as saying of the Blackwood: "It's a giant fiasco. It's a poorly-designed never thoroughly thought out vehicle. It's useless as a pickup truck, it's useless as a sport utility. It makes no sense. and that basically is the problem they've run across." |
