Well, I may regret this, but Im going to publicly document my little diesel project. Im putting a powerstroke 2.8 liter diesel in my 1997 Discovery. I started two days ago, and got the site up tonight. I will make it a little more sexy as time permits, but for now, its like a diary. Please feel free to get involved with it, as I will surely need some help on a few things from you guys on this.

When looking at the photos, sort by alphabetical to have them be in time sequenced order.

here is the link..

Richard, where are you located? Just curious as to where you sourced your engine? I look forward to following your build-up.

Good luck. I am also undertaking a similar project, now I have a good online resource to review as I do mine.

Richard,

I think this is a great selection. I'm thinking of a RRC with the Powerstroke 2.8. I've had International Scouts for 20+ years. Years ago a friend dropped in a Perkins-Elmer 4 cyl diesel and was able to get 30+ mpg in Colorado. I have thought that once the gas engine dies I would go that route. Problem is they run forever.

Richard,
I'm very interested in your project. Don't want to be too nosey, but will you reveal costs to us?
Good luck

WHY change, it can't be for the fuel economy, the US V8 diesel really dont get all that great mileage. Torque? are you going with a auto box or manual?

Mike, it's not your typical "US" Powerstroke, meaning it's basically a revised TD5 4 cylinder engine, not a big, heavy V8.

Why not?!!!

It's the 2.8, turbocharged 4 cylinder. It gets the same mileage as the 300 TDi, which is markedly better than the 3.9/4.0/4.6.

My gosh, I'd kill for a cheap diesel...

Well, I plan to have my one-year-old daughter learn how to drive in my 2000 D2, so when the motor dies, I've been thinking diesel as well. Richard, is the Powerstroke 2.8 the same motor as East Coast Rovers has begun converting Defenders to? It sounds as if it is the same. I'm not sure how open they are to sharing their info, but they did document a Tdi conversion of a Disco1 on their website (see www.eastcoastrover.com).

Good Luck on your project, I'm jealous!

One great source of very thorough Powerstroke 2.8l information is called British Restorations in Lennoxville, Quebec. The owner, Mike Wesson, has been pushing turbo-diesels in North American Land Rovers for some time. Here's the "dream engine" link:

Good luck,

Thanks for the clarifaction Richard, not being a diesel kinda of guy i thought it was a ford V8, altho i have nothing againest them, and feel if powerstroking is your thing as long as you don't impose your lifestyle on me, oh wait wrong issue, sorry, I like the idea I will be following your progress. being dumb to the whole concept i saw Powerstroke and thought Ford. my mistake. good luck.

Dekkard,
Dekkard how is it going? Doubt you remember meeting me.

In any case . . . feel free to email me and you can put me on speed dial with some of the other nuts.

PS by day two I would have had the motor out and the new mounts on the frame :-)

$10,000 plus probably $3-4,000 to convert if done professionally (?) v $5k for a RPI 4.6 with new ecu delivered plus tops $1k installation

If these numbers are even vaguely accurate, I'd still stick with the V8 preferring wallet economy over fuel economy

Chris,

Diesel is the future of EVERYTHING. Although I do agree with you that a "grunty" V8 kicks ass, that diesel eficiency, water-resistance, simplicity, and overall torque rules. The only thing lacking is that it costs some a lot of money.

I've gotten my hands on a brand new GM 6.2 V8 diesel, and eventhough it won't be that more economical, it'll definitely work better for me in the wet (and some of you guys know I like "them" wet...)...plus at 750$ that is almost cheaper than a used 4.6!
