Need advise...

About a month ago, my 99 DI was running hot. Reservoir was bone dry. Changed thermostat/gasket and refilled coolant. Also, my Check Engine light was on w/ P1316 fault code. Replaced spark plugs w/ platinums, code cleared. #3 cyl. plug did look pretty funky, w/ possible ignited coolant on it?!?
Last night, after a 3hr highway drive, I noticed it was running hot again. Same issue - bone dry reservoir. Now, I have not seen any leaks. What goes in must come out, right? The oil looked fine - no "chocolate milk". When it cooled down and after adding a gallon of coolant I tried to start - very hard turnover, but did start - exhaust smelled like antifreeze! Thus, I am assuming I have a leak into a cylinder and is slowly being ignited...I had it towed to LR dealership and await their diagnosis, as I was in fear of driving anymore and possibly further damage. Things now are beginning to make sense as to where the coolant was lost...

? - Is this the cylinder head gasket? Or worse...
? - What else can I expect in their analysis?

Any thoughts are appreciated!!!

You can lose coolant through a number of avenues, the most expensive being a slipped cylinder, with a bad head gasket and warped head following closely behind.

But, let us not jump to the worst case scenario yet. You gots lots of other places for coolant to leak from that you might not otherwise be immediately aware of.

It might be worse, it might be far less. Might just be a loose hose!

Peace,
Paul

Thanks for the support! I assumed it wouldnt be a hose b/c of the coolant smell in the exhaust fumes. What else could it be then, if not the head gasket, which would cause the smell in the exhaust?

Thanx

I had a problem with my 95, and it took me a while to find the leak. It was the 2 inch piece of rubber hosing, to the left of the distributor. It had a tiny crack on the underside, and the stuff would just shoot out, hit the block and immediatly evaporate. One time I opened up the hood, stood back a few feet, and had someone gas it(it warmed up some), and I saw the stuff squirt out.

Just look around the engine bay for white dried residue.

Good things to look for...would they cause the exhaust to smell like coolant? Intake seal would cause this?

Oh, by the way...I called dealership after work...they have started with removing the radiator. When I asked them if I should be giving them authorization or if I should get an estimate - their response was "...well, do you want your truck fixed, or not?" Quite the nice attitude. I know that LR of Orlando is used to Orlando Magic players and other sorts of rich b-yatches telling them to just fix it. They sell quite a few Rangies in this little dealership @ $70K-$80K ea.

Why are they removing the raidiator? If it is the head gasket or valve seals, there is no reason to remove the raidiator. I know this because I just replaced my head gasket my self two weeks ago. Did they even tell you where the leak is coming from? F that dealer. Tell them yes you want it fixed but you are taking it else where.. (I know, easier said that done)That is such a piss poor attitude by the dealer. Sorry, but it sounds like the are going to stick it to you. Bend over they are coming in. FYI, the cost of replacing my head gasket ended up at about $800. That included a complete valve job, new head bolts, intake bolts and gakets all around. good luck

No sh!t!

What happened to customer service? I believe they are/will justify rad. work as diagnostic...I expained everything I described above, but they want to start w/ radiator...

I figured about that much...probably more...getting out the astrolube!

Will

There is still abosolutely no reason (that I know of) to remove the rad to find a coolant leak. Every time I had a coolant leak that I could not find, I took it to my local shop and they would do a pressure test, were they would pressurize the coolant system to something like 20 psi or so. If there are any leaks in the hoses or the like, they would appear. Sounds like you will need the industrial strength astrolube. I would not be surprised if they tell you need a new head gasket, raidiator, valve job, and something else that has absolutley nothing to due with coolant loss. I feel you pain. good luck to you

UPDATE:
Radiator was removed and pressure tested...found obstruction in core - metal filings. LR determined that the water pump was basically coming apart and was venting coolant over time, due to blockage. I am picking up tonight...
