Finally getting the Pitman arm off my steering box, I now find I need to replace the pinion seal.

Is it as simple as prying the old one out and driving the new one in?

I'm searching for an alternate source for the seal, fortunately, the dimensions are stamped on the collar.

Peace,
Paul

Replacing the seal never works for long in my experience. That's why we don't do it anymore. The shaft gets a little loose in the bearings and it moves more than the seal can contain, so a new seal may work for a little while but soon it leaks too. That's why everyone installs rebuilt boxes. It's more than a seal issue.

Check with Meridian Auto Parts in San Diego -- they've managed to correct the design defect in the factory steering box -- their rebuilt boxes absolutely do not leak and come with a lifetime warranty.

Paul-

I replaced the input and sector shaft seals on my '89 RRC box several times before I bit the bullet and bought a rebuilt from Meridian. Each time I replaced them they lasted about 10k miles before leaking again.

Of course, my technique for installing seals didn't require disassembly of the box so some would say that's why seals failed! :-) Enough people have told me that they've had the same probs that I don't think that's why though.

My $.02
