I've read alot about it, and I think what I'm experiencing is it.

However, I can't find anything about repairing it.

Do you need a whole new transmission? What? Is there something I can do now that is cheaper than waiting until it falls apart?

To update:

75,000 kms.

Clunks when it gets warm (nice and smooth when its cold) when going from R to D or vice versa.
It clunks at "parking lot" speed when there is very little or no throttle.

There was a service info. from rover about this. It applied to earier cars. The fix is an updated input gear in the "T" box. You should also inspect the out put shaft of the trans. On an auto no big deal just the coupling shaft. On a 5 speed it is the mainshaft. It is called frett wear.

My 94 had a considerable clunk that I was ignoring because it seems to be a common problem. Then I was under the vehicle checking the transfer case fluid and realized that the drum for the emergency brake was loose due to the four driveshaft bolts being loose. Tightening the bolts got rid of my clunk! Worth a try.
BTW the tightening was not trivial because the head was turning on the inside. I had to cut off the bolts, remove the assembly and replace the bolts with some that I modified so that the head could not turn.

Yes, its an automatic. Its also a '96. Thanks for the responses.

Any idea what it costs to get LR to do this updated input gear fix?

I'll check for looseness.

Just wondering if I should really do something about it now before its "too late"...
