I picked up a portable MP3 player to use instead of a CD changer. For music it's great...I can get 25 - 35 songs on it without using an expansion card. However, here's my problem...

I have some books-on-tape that I've copied over into MP3 format. It turned out to be one big (~40MB) file for each tape side. This is fine when I'm listening to a side straight thru, but if I stop playback 3/4 of the way thru the file then when I start playback again it starts at the beginning and I have to manually forward. This is a royal PITA.

I would hate to have to re-rip these and sit there the whole time to pause, create a new file, and start again. What I would like to do would be find a program that lets me edit an existing MP3 file similar to film editing. I would like to be able to pick a place in my file and "cut" it into two. I could then use this method to break the single 30 - 40 minute files into a number of shorter "chapters". I would like to be able to pick these cut points while playing the file so that I can put them at logical break points (chapters). Naturally, an Open Source / Freeware solution would be best, and anything for Linux is preferable to a Windoze solution (I'm sure you MACers have some great solutions, since media editing has always been one of your strongest points).

advTHANKSance!!!

Lawrence, you could try www.dbpoweramp.com music converter. It's a great site and freeware.
Hope this helps.

Lawrence, i'll ask some friends who are big into mp3 format... I have a Archos 20 gig, thats usb2 and drag and drop. so I just shove what I want on there.. but I do run into the same problem as you where I have a book and its in 2 parts and when you want to listen again you have to fast foward it. It would be much better in chapters like you said..

I'll see what i can find out..
