Anyone know of a good aftermarket alternator for a 95 disco? I took mine to two local shops, both said that every part within the alternator needed to be replaced. (Eh? that's pretty bad). I took it to the 2nd shop because I didnt quite believe it, but the 2nd said the same thing.

Soo.. I can pay 200 bucks to let them just rebuild it completly, but anyone know if there's a replacment alt I can pick up from somewhere like Autozone that'll do the job?

I notice there are some sensors on the back, but I think that is only for the battery light that comes on in the console. Thanks for any direction.

It was 230 to refurbish my alternator since they needed to replace so much.

I ordered one from Advanced Auto with a lifetime warranty for 195.00

If you want to pay for a new one safari gard has a high output alt for less than a brand new oem. If your going to be running multipule accessories you might need it.

I replaced mine with a rebuilt from Advance Auto Parts about 2 months/5k miles ago and my tach is starting to bounce every now and again. I will be ordering a Mean Green probably this week. Later.. Robert

Rebuilts aren't worth if in my opinion. I replaced last year on a 91 Pathfinder with a rebuilt and had it replaced again 6 months later, before she finally died.

Robert, if your "tacho' bounces around every now and then, check that the tacho wire connection at the alternator is tight. Cheaper than a new alternator!

Roland, all connections are tight. Rebuilt alternator is just junk. Although I am not currently with a winch, I always have computer/printer/cell phone/DVD player/camera batteries, stereo, etc.. charging up or in use. Hardly ever have nothing pulling power and making that alternator work double time..

The minute some numbnut tells me "every part in the alternator has to be replaced" I'd say yeah, thanks and walk away. People seem to have widely varying opinions on this, but I went the aftermarket route and got stung, for whatever reason (could be a million) but luckily kept my original, had it rebuilt for $98 and put it back in with no problems to date.

There's a difference between rebuilt and remfd...
NAPA sells a BOSCH remfd alternator for almost $400.00. I've had friends who have purchased the delco-remy remfd from Advance and it works great. Both come with warranty too. I can't imagine the difference, as both are reputable companies. My friend DID have to use the warranty though..the(Advance) unit failed after going thru a river. It didn't look like it got wet - looked like coincidence to me - but then again... it was within 20 feet of the river when the light came on. I'd buy the one from Advance.

Is an aftermarket alternator necessary to simultaneously run 4 Hella 4ks, 2 Hella 3ks, 2 rear works lamps, and a winch?

Jered: What exactly is wrong with your alternator? Did it just completely die or is it just not producing enough power? If it still works and doesn't produce sufficient power, it could be that one of the diodes inside it needs replacing. If you listen to the alternator running and it has what seems to be a bearing noise, give it a little tap with a hammer. If the noise disappears, its the diode that's on it's way out and it's a cheap fix.

Brad: Check your amp output on the equipment you want to run against your alternator output. If you exceed it, your accessories will eventually feed off your battery.

Roland, I took it to two shops and they said the rotor was shot, the bearings needed to be replaced, etc.

I ended up just replacing it.
