Hi all, Land Rover newbee here,

I'm considering a purchase of a totally mint '95 Discvery (SE7?) for low money. Its has around 150k miles on it but everything works great and its loaded w/ all OEM LR accessories and has been maintained really well.
The only thing is a potentially cracked cylinder head... or a bad head gasket in best case senario.

Could someone please tell me how much an assembled 3.9 OBD1 (I would assume, since its '95) passanger side (i dunno how else to describe it) cylinder head would cost.
And if anyone knows the cost of head gaskets and other associated parts, plz let me know too.

Also, a total newbee question here, do the disco series II wheel fit on a series I?
Thanks,
-Kamil

www.atlanticbritish.com list cylinder heads for $699.95, though I'm not sure if that's per head or both.
www.roversnorth.com list them for $999.00.
Since you are going to have the heads off, It is well worth it to have them ported and polished for mild performance. Found out last night that was probably my best bang for the buck when I hung with a Mercedes ML500 getting on the freeway. Of course, I have heard that ML owners have not been getting the acceleration that they thought they would out of them because of gearing.
As for D2 wheels, they will not fit. Lug nut pattern is smaller.

Head gasket KIT for all Gaskets needed was less than $200 if memory serves. There are many varieties and you want the synthetic Carbon Fiber Gasket is what I've heard on the list with metal rings of some sort that reinforce it. When you do this you ditch the lowest most cyl head bolds and dont put them in. Sounds wierd but I've read this many places. The newer rovers dont even have those lower holes cast into the heads.
Anyhow, I think I've seen a gastet kit for like $130 but for the good one I think its closer to $200. Sorry I cant be more specific.
I'll second the Porting Job. NEver done a rover but every other car I've done or seen it doen on had noticable results.
Good luck
Todd

It is unlikely the head itself is cracked, however, there could be other problems that may exacerbate the expense, like a slipped sleeve in number three cylinder, however, your statement that it is on the passenger side does not support this scenario. Most likely, it is a bad gasket and warped head due to a clogged radiator-induced overheating. You may also have some valve guide issues depending upon how hot it got and how far it was driven after the fact.

I had less than $700 in a complete head job and that included all of the parts I didn't need yet paid for anyway and the machine work on the heads themselves. The kit of gaskets includes way more than you really need, get the head gaskets, intake gaskets and exhaust gaskets and you're good to go, but the kit may be more economical (go figure, get way more parts, pay slightly more). Don't forget new head bolts-I'd hate to have that much time in a job and have it fail because I was too damned cheap to spend another $75.00 on head bolts.

Rover engines made after June 1995 did not have the lower row of head bolts and the heads aren't even drilled to accept them. These engines also use the composition gaskets, rather than the steel shim gaskets.
