Here's the deal.
I live in NJ, outside of NYC. I work in NYC, us a bus to get to work, most of the stores/gyms are walking distance away.
I need a car to drive between Boston and NYC twice a month or so. (gas milage don't really matter).

I need a truck because I always carry a lot of stuff w/ me i.e. bikes, skis, dog, etc. and I also need it for towing of 3000lb car/trailor combo (its a Civic HPDE car FYI).
No, there isn't that much place to go off roading here. :-( I tried, a used to have a '84 CJ-& long time ago.

I have found a really nice, well mainted '95 Disco w/ 150k miles. The current owner is LR fanatic, he told me of all the updates he did to the car, all the OEM accessories, etc. he even gave a number to two of his LR mechanics that worked on the truck.
I spoke to them and we basically determined that the Disco needs one new cyl head.

Could someone please tell me how much it would cost to have a new cyl head installed?
Or worst case cenario a new/use 3.9 V8.
I was quoted a price of $800 for a bare head, no clue about the labor, etc.

I've made this post but no one has replied.

BTW, I've always had a weakness for Land Rovers, my father is a huge fans of 4x4s, he has a Lada Niva (he lives in Poland) and the LR was always a dream of his.
I have rode a in Td5 110 in Southern Africa for a month (about 8000 miles)(South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabue)(there was also a Land Cruiser in the grupe) but I've never liked the Discoveries until I rented one from my local Enterprise (it was an '02 SD) and fell in love w/ it.

I'm currently shopping for a RR Classic or a Disco and this seems to be the best one over all (except the engine) that I've seen thus far.
Thanks,
-Kamil

Why a cylinder head? While it may just be a gasket 150k on a 3.9 would give me doubts about the condition of the short block. Compression test for sure.

Used heads can be had in the $400 range a piece.

If you need any help feel free to email me. I might be able to find a head for you, or even a disco.

Cheers
Ron

Ron, we own a 98 Discovery with over 100k bought brand new (GREAT Vehicle) No real problems minus regular stuff like alternator and starter. I would be a little concerned with that particlar problem on the 95 disco you are looking at plus the fact that the current owner only wants $4500 for his disco! Our 98 is still worth 20k to 25k. With only a three year difference I dont get it. My best reccomendation would be to find a 97 or 98 (98 last year of this body style) from a reputable dealer or someone that has not played around mechanically so much with their vehicle. Good luck with your search once you drive the disco for awhile you'll never look back!!!

$4500 would be about right for a 150K '95 needing some work.

Exactly how are you determining that your 100K '98 is worth 20K to 25K because the Kelly Blue Book gives that figure a big thumbs down.

Kamil, My advice would be to search for a 97-98 Disco if you're really set on them. You can find one for around $8-10k depending on where you look. Discoweb would probably be your best source for finding a used Disco. The 94-95s are known to have valve problems and the 96 is known to be one of the worst manufacturer years (probably because of new technology and not thoroughly road tested, ie, no distributer and a jump from the 3.9 to the 4.0).

I own a 96 and have been fortunate that the first owner took good care of it. I have had many electrical problems but no mechanical problems whatsoever. But with that said Discos can vary week to week depending on the manufacture date. One 96 can be very different from another even if the maintenance and usage has been the same.

In my opinion I think you should try to find a 97 or 98 for a little more money and not worry about the head problem. They are probably the best D1 manufacture years. And with high milage the price on a newer one would be fair especially if you're looking at a 95 with 150k miles.

Just my 2¢...
