My 89 RRC w/approx. 120k miles has developed an intermitant lifter knock. It has gotten worse over the past few months. It usually does it when I go up long steep hills. When the vehicle goes downhill for a while it will stop knocking. I have tried the oil additive approach and does not seem to work. It made it a little better. The oil consumption is not excessive. Should I go for a new cam, lifters and timing chain or just new lifters? Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

I would give the rocker arms a close inspection |

Like Jim said, I'd at least pop the rocker covers off and take a look. You may just have sludge buildup or something like that. |

I have a lot of build up. What do I look for regarding the rocker arms? The problem is directly related to the incline of the road. I have run STP thru the motor, but no luck on getting rid of the problem. |

My water pump went on Thursday. I then broke off four of the bolts while removing the water pump. Since I have to remove the front cover now I am planning on getting a new cam and lifters. |

Yeah, check your rockers also. I thought I had a bad lifter and it turned out to be one of the steel inserts in one of the rocker arms getting pushed deeper into the rocker arm. The push-rod clearance ended up more than .125 rather than .030. Sounds just like a bad lifter. I got new rocker assemblies for around $100 ea. from the dealer, believe it or not. Prolly the only thing from the dealer thats cheaper than our usual supply houses. I ended up pulling the engine and am having it rebuilt. ('90 - 3.9 w/160K miles) The main bearings had most of the white metal gone - down to the copper. Replace your timing chain while your there. RPi has all the stuff you'd need. And a performance cam available. |

or you can have a good cam custom ground by engle in cal, they ground me one and the truck runs awesome, also you can get lifters from summit, crane, also a better timing chain from cloyes, a true dual roller setup, much less slack then stock chains and cheaper too if you are interested I can get you part numbers |

What is the grind on your cam? Lift, duration, etc. Thanks |
