I have a 1996 D1 with a relatively new clutch and R380 manual transmission. On the way to work the other day I was going about 65 mph and coasted down a hill. At the bottom I tried to put it gack into 5th gear and it made an awful sound and stalled. I pulled over and tried to get it going agian. The Rover started fine but it was very difficult to select a gear. When I got it into 1st and tried to drive a bit it stalled.

I had found a leak of AFT a couple days earlier in the cooling return line so my origonal thought was that the leak had been going for a while and I screwed up the bearings. However, when a filled the , it only took 1.5 quarts comapared to the 2.7L capacity. After I filled it up I tried the process over with the same results but in addition the Rover made a horrible sound when the clutch was depressed and it was out of gear. The sound lasted until I had totally released the clutch. I was convinced it was a bearing or tooth in the before that but could it be a clutch problem?

Any advise would be great. If anyone knows a good mechanic close to Fayetteville, NC please let me know

Matt

Exploded input bearing, would be my first guess.

Any chunks/bits when you drained it?

I have not drained it yet. I had it towed to work so I am pretty limited with tools and such. My employer would probably not take too kindly to ATF all over his parking lot.

If it is an exploded imput bearing what type of work and expense am I looking at? Thanks

if the horrible sound is only when you depress the pedal.. i would agree with Ron B.. you will need to pull the transmission like you would if you were doing a clutch job.. and while you are spending the time & money, it'd make sense to replace the clutch & pressure plate (at least have the plate looked at)... no sense in having to pay someone to replace the clutch in 6 months..

If it is an input bearing someone who knows what they are doing can pull the case apart quickly without dismantling it to replace the bearing, the bearing is $25 or so.

Of course if you cannot pull the case yourself you are looking at $$$$ because time is money.

Once the case is out it is easy to see if the input bearing exploded. The input shaft will be loose and spin excentricly.

You could have other issues too if it was 2 quarts low on oil (eek!).

Hydraulic clutch? The ATF you saw might have leaked from the slave cylinder rather than the . If you can't disengage the clutch, you'd have a difficult time changing gears.

Peace,
Paul
