Hey guys, my question is the optional air rear suspension worth it on the 03 Disco? I believe it's standard on the HSE, but optional on the other trim models. It appears that the Disco doesn't seem to have a very good departure angle(21 degree's), which is actually worse than the 31 degree departure angle on the Freelander. Land Rover quotes that with the optional air rear suspension, the departure angle is 24 degree's with it in high mode which might help a lot from draggin the bumper. If I later wanted to lift the suspension and start modifying, i'm assuming that the air suspension would have to go, right? I'm just curious what your thoughts are, because I have an 02 Freelander right now that has been a reliability nightmare and was considering possibly an 03 Disco S, or maybe SE if I can get a deal on it. After having a vehicle spend 43 days of the 5 months i've owned it being in the shop on various repairs, i'm honestly getting frustrated with it.

I have the air suspension on mine and I like it. It's nice when you load it up because the rear doesn't drag. It rides good. I drove a 03 with springs in the rear and I really couldn't tell much if any difference in the ride. If you lift it you can put spacers in the sensor arms and raise it up some, or they make spacers that will go under the air bags for them I beleive Rovertym Engineering makes them.

I think the main problem with the air bags is if you want to get more suspension droop in the back you'd probably have to put springs in, but I'm not sure on that.

I put OME springs in the front and put spacers in the sensor arms and I'm quite happy with the setup for the type of driving I do. I'd suspicion if I ever really wanted to setup my Disco for some really radical off-roading I'd probably switch to springs in the back and lose the air bags.

Anyway that's my take on it, but I'll defer to people on here who have much more experience than I do, as I could be off base some.

I guess it depends on how radical you want to get as far as off-roading is concerned as to what setup is the best.

Thanks for your post. I'm just curious how durable the rear air springs are, not to mention to reliability of them when taken into offroad situations. Although i'm not sure which route i'll go, if I ever end up with another Land Rover product, i'll probably pass on the rear air suspension mainly since it's only offered as part of a $3k suspension package on the SE, and the HSE's would be way out of my price range.

June,

The rear springs (SLS) are a great item for on the road. However, if you decide to lift the vehicle and actually go off road, they might become a liability. Meaning they could come apart and then you are hosed. Ask J. Bard about them.
