Australian 4WD Monthly just did a test in concerto with the LR owners Assoc of Australia - 5 test defenders - all same load, same tyres and engine/trans - ie 2.5 TD5 manuals. Hill climbs on axel twisters, beach and dune work etc. One was open diffed with CDL engaged. 3 had rear (NOT FRONT) lockers - 1 air locker (ARB) and the others auto's (Detroit and Lock Right from memory). Drivers told drive the same - this was monitered carfully - vehicles were crawling with high tire pressures to load up drive systems. The open diff did not do very well up a steep incline on dirt, in a bad axel twister as you would imagine. The ETC and locked vehicles did the same, however the ETC needed some more revs to work as well as the locked ones and as such could not crawell quite as slowly up terrain. On the sand and steep dunes the ETC was as good as locked vehicles. Obvioulsy locked front and rear would be better again. BTW the defender extreme here has CDL AND ETC - both were engaged.

For your info.

Cheers
