Does anyone have any experience importing a diesel Disco/Freelander into the USA. Every dealer says no way through Rover, end of story. Canada no longer sells diesels, and my Spanish isn't so good, so I'd rather not go to Mexico. Short of flying to the UK, buying one and shipping it home, what can I do? |

are they even legal in the states? I lived in the US for a couple years while I attended college and I dont think I ever saw a gas station that sold diesel....luckily those kinds of regulations wont come for a while down here so I can keep my diesel running for cheap... |

uhhh there is plenty of diesel here in the states (semis, tractors...) and yes they are legal as long as you can get them here. I think the best option is to fly out to europe and buy one there, have it shipped to Canada and drive back, but thats quite an adventure... |

The hardest part for importing vehicles into the US of A is EPA regulations, and the stupid 5 mph bumpers, and other safety issues.

Wait until 2005 and you can legally buy a diesel Freelander from your dealer (the latest buzz...). Fresh from the inner circles at G4! |

Jeff, Kindly visit the link pasted below. East coast rover in Maine seems to do a lot of work on the diesel rovers and also do the conversions. Hope the link helps. Cheers Raj http://www.eastcoastrover.com/Tdiconversions.html |

You can't just go to Europe and buy one and have it shipped back. When you arrive the DOT and Customs Service will inspect the vehicle. If it is not US spec, It has to have a sticker that says "this vehicle meets US specs" then you are screwed. You must pay a bond and turn the truck over to a company that will convert it to US specs. It is very expensive. The deisel part is even more complicated than say importing a D110. The US emission laws are pretty strick for diesel and low sulfer deisel is near impossible to find in the states. My LR dealer does the service for a D110 tha Jimmy Buffet had imported and he paid over 100K to have it done. So I guess your bets bet is to just wait. Ford is developing V-6 version of the powerstroke (the new one) for Expedition so it couldnt be too long before that motor makes it into a LR.--Matt |
