Hi,

I'll replace my intake manifold gasket this weekend to stop the coolant leak. Any tips to make this job easier or have it done right the first time are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What year is the truck and how many miles on it? I reccomend you considier replacing the head gaskets and have the valves checked over. Why? Well you will have half the work done. I replaced my intake gasket to fix a coolant leak, just like you, but about 6 months later the head gaskets really started to leak bad and needed to be fixed. There have been upgrades to some of the parts. Make sure you get the following "new" items

End clamps and bolts. New end clamps are much wider.
Use "The Right Stuff" rtv. you can buy it autozone.
New bolts for intake manifold itself

You will need new valve cover gaskets. get the rubber ones.

I am sure I am missing something.

Call Rovers North for parts, many of the genuine parts have droped in price. Some as much as 50%

good luck

PS Do you have a work shop manual?

Use thread sealer on the bolts, put all the bolts in before you tighten them down. Put a dab of sealant on the end seals at the ends where they go between the block and heads. Use a composite intake manifold gasket, buy new end clamps.

GO TO AUTOZONE/CHECKER/PEPBOYS!!!!!!!!

Order the intake manifold gasket and valve-cover gaskets for a '63 Buick Skylark. At least with Autozone or Checker, the parts will be ordered and at the store the next day by 3:00.

LOL

complete crap! I bet they give you cork valve cover gaskets.

There are times to be cheap, intake gaskets are not one of them.

Guys, Thanks so much for the info.

I do have a shop manual and I will use that as a guide. It is a 1996 and has about 110,000 miles and Brad, I will look into about replacing the head gasket. Any tips for the head gasket replacement?

Do not go get anything but genuine gaskets. The price for the intake gasket from Rovers North is only $16. It use to be $32. With 110k on the rig and if the it never had a valve job done, you have been lucky. I assume your are in the US. My heads we fine, but since I had it all apart I had a complete valve job performed. There is a good article on this subject at http://www.robisonservice.com/servicedep/pdfs/carbon_fouling1.pdf. Best tip is to make sure everything is super clean. Where are you located? I was somewaht lucky, the local shop kept a set of head in stock for doing valve jobs so there customers would not be with out a car for more than a day. They let me take their head home and then I returned mine as soon as possible.

keep coming back with more questions

good luck

As a added note when you do the head job. Replace the head bolts. They are special bolts and should only be used once.

First off , before any of that. Have you tried to tighten the bolts ? I am guessing that will fix your issue and you can avoid the rest.

Kyle,

Thanks for the tip. I did used that tip of yours sometime back and it did stop the leak for awhile but it started again.

I am here in San Francisco and never had a valve job done on the disco and hope that I will never need one. But I will look into it.

I will give roversnorth a call today.

Thanks again.
