What tools do I need to get to (pack) the squeeky berring in my left front wheel? And how much time is needed for this project. Please use the following formula: ((L.R. Mechanic Time Used) x (Ratio of no-rain days to rain days in Portland Oregon)) x 3 = My time on any L.R. project. http://landrover.mrbaileyshistory.net

R.B., It takes me about 1/2hr to 45 min. to completely replace a c.v. joint. Of course I have don't it way to many times. You will need a hub tool and standard sockets and ring expanding plyers. That is about it. It is a easy project. |

The hub tool is one that I can get from R. North or some other outfit right? Or what size do I need to look for at the local shop? And the ring expanding plyers are standard issue right? Thanks

I think the hub tool is about $18. Well worth the money. I use it all the time. I don't think "ring expanding plyers" is the technical name for the tool but you get the idea probably. I bought mine at Harbor Freight for about $5.00. |

Snap-ring pliers. Don't buy the universal ones, get a separate pair for inner and outers. The five dollar sets won't last long and often collapse just when you need them. The hubnut wrench is 2-1/16", a deep well is the way to go. you may find you can only buy it in 3/4" drive, get an adapter to use with your 1/2 drive ratchet. 1/2 hour to 45 minutes to swap a CV joint-you're smokin' to do 'em THAT fast, especially on a vehicle that's never been taken apart. My truck has nearly 169K on it and still has original CV joints and I wheel it every chance. I usually plan about four hours to tear a front end apart and put it back together and count myself pretty lucky to do it that fast (I must take my time). Now that I think about it, I always pull the swivel seal, etc, so it might not take me that long to just do a CV joint, but that's awfully fast. Peace, Paul |
