I am moving from CO to IN in august and I have rented a 6'x12' trailer to tow with my disco I. I was wondering if I’d need some kind of external mirror to see round the trailer. If I do then any recommendations on part and how to fit.

Thanks

James

the extended mirrors would be a lot better than the stock mirrors currently on there. The more visibilty the safer you will be

Well get them if you want but I've towed one that size before w/ no problems... I just tilted the mirrors out a little more and I have some of those little convex 'blind spot mirrors' on mine. Only had a small blind spot up by the truck, not a big deal just be extra certain you turn your head before you switch lanes.

If I wanted to have a look at an extended mirror, where would I find one?

I bought a set of extended mirrors for under $20.00 at Pep boys. They mounted with rubber straps over the existing mirrors. Visibility was greatly improved.

yeah, any auto parts store, or RV/travel trailer place, maybe walmart. The best kind are the molded ones that fit over the stock mirrors like a glove and don't rely on straps, I can't remember the brand and I'm not sure if they make them for rovers or not.

Yep, Kyle is right. After renting a trailer to drag my series truck home, the bastards robbed me for a week's late fees because they couldn't find the trailer in their own lot after my wife had gone back and gotten signed receipts for everything. It took me three #$@%@#&(@%&%^ days to get it resolved and the bastards refused to apologize and tried to blame it on me!

The worst part was when I provided them with a receipt signed by the woman who had robbed me.

Strong words, but what else do you call it?

Peace,
Paul

James,

I towed one last weekend with now problem. I do recall seeing a news show about a lovely old couple towing their RV through a beautiful vally out west somewhere. The RV got a flat and b/c they didn't have the extended mirrors they couldn't see the fact that that sparks from their wheel rim burned the whole damn valley down. Fire dept gave them a bill for a million. (the cost of fighting the fire) So $20.00 at Pep Boys doesn't seem that bad if you can get over the fact that they have the worst cutomer service of anyone anywhere hands down.

James, moving FROM Colorado? I'm sorry.
I towed a Uhaul from Denver to New York earlier this year and last year. My advice: Check the uhaul over thoroughly before you agree to leave with it. The first time, my signals on the trailer were intermittent and the tire pressure was low in one tire. The second time, the slob hooking the thing up was lazy securing the safety chains, and left the wiring hanging down so far that I would have drug them both along the road. The chains would have surely come loose and the wiring would have been destroyed. Also, the trailer you reserve may not necessarily be the one you end up with; Uhaul doesn't guarantee it will be waiting for you, because they don't know for sure if it'll arrive as planned. Sometimes the one they expect to show up doesn't. You usually have seven days from pick up to drop off, so unless you're going to need all that time for the drive, try to reserve the trailer for pickup a couple of days before you leave, just in case. That way you have some time for them to locate another one if yours doesn't show up, or if you don't like the looks of the one that does. Hope that helps.

I've rented trucks/trailers from all the major rental companys, and uhaul is by far the worst. Never had any major problems, just lots of little ones. CHECK EVERYTHING OVER YOURSELF! The last time, the guy in the yard gave me the wrong trailer (as the right one wasn't there) and since the VIN was different from the one I purchased their in-house insurance for, I found out that the insurance was worthless. Just be responsible for yourself. Other than that, enjoy the beautiful USA scenery!

Well U-haul would not have been first choice for renting a trailer but I could not find anywhere else that is here and in Indiana as well. Their equipment always looks old and "well worn in".

Are you meant to drive and take valium at the same time? :-)

One last question, what is the best way to secure the trailer? I really really dont want it to go anywhere (without me)or the door to be opened and all my stuff taken.

The trailers accept a standard padlock on the door. I'd also recommend a hitch-pin lock.
Good luck,

What are some other alternatives for renting a trailer (other than U-Haul) to tow my series? Uhaul quoted me over $700 one-way (NY to Idaho). I'm thinking of just welding up my own because I plan to tow my series quite frequently on longer hauls.

Thanks,
EM

my dad was towing a u haul trailer (empty) back to PA when i moved to NJ years ago. the hitch ball nut came off and he had to leave the trailer along the road while he went and got a new nut. he came back and the thing was gone. dumbasses forgot to check to see if the trailer was empty. can't do much with a big ass u haul trailer except paint it and hope for the best. guess he lost the security deposit. :-)
make sure you bolts are tight!!

Is there any particular type that you would recommend? Also I hear the "orange bitch" comes with chains that also attach to the Disco, how do they attach and can I padlock them too?

They are just the safety chains like every trailer has, you could probably padlock them actually you would probably have to if you wanted to lock the trailer on because if my memory serves me right the tongue has a funky latch that wont accept a lock.

Snowman,
Does ryder rent small trailers??? I was about to call and reserve a u-haul, sorry- orange bitch today but this thread is dredging up bad memories. Thanks

What about the other way around. Renting a truck and towing the Rover? Anything special to note? I know you need a larger car carrier that gets all four wheels off the ground, but any place to tie the truck down to?

Is this safe? Etc.

Any experiences? Don't think I can get all my stuff in the rover and a 6x12 trailer.

Yep, I was probaly wrong. I use to work near a big Ryder franchise and there were other truck related units nearby with trailers and I assumed they were Ryder. It's odd U-haul would have the monopoly. Maybe it's because there is bigger liability issue with a trailer and others don't want to contend with it. I've rented trucks from both many times for work and Ryder is the better for sure.

Greg, all I know is that U-haul wont give me a flatbed trailer for the disco. They said it was too heavy for their trailer.

Well I just reserved it... I swear if I get a flat I'm just going to drag that mother the whole way :-)

Greg, my cousin towed his fj40 behind a uhaul all the way from Montana to Florida with no problems. Well no problems after he removed the 'governor' (block on the floor under the gas pedal) that limited the speed to 55 mph.

Thats interesting James, I know someone who towed a 4 runner on one and they can't weigh much less. Maybe the trick is to show up with in a friends tarus or something and make the switch back at your house :-)

I don't know about small utility trailers, but if you need a car dolly or car trailer (4 wheels off the ground) Ryder will rent that to you -- at least they did to me 2+ years ago.

Cool. I think I had rather use Ryder anyway if I end up having to move myself. Hopefully I wont, but if so, Uhaul leaves me pissed everytime I use them. Especially when the $19.99 one day truck rental turns into an $85.00 visa charge that can't seem to be explained or fixed. Go figure.

They will still rent you a truck but not for a one way trip. I think the negative stigma from the OK city bombing has a lot to do with that one.

I remember seeing the trucks start to change from yellow to white afterwards and I don't think it was to long after it that they stoped the one way rentals.

Keep a look out on your brakes. Last year I helped a friend move a bunch of furniture, hookin the trailer to the back of the disco ..... maybe the load was a little too much but after 2 hours i noticed a really strong burning smell. Then I found that my brakes were really cookin. All the extra weight really did a # on em' but maybe i just needed new ones... N

the 6x12 uhauls have brakes i hauled one from dc to indi without any problem behind my disco the only thing i had was also non working lights on the trailer due to a bad ground conection on the uhaul the other thing you have to do is switch to high octane before you start your trip this makes also a big difference

damn the 6x12 is ment to have enertia braking... maybe cos they never get serviced? lol ... well I'm hoping on my jouney not to do too much stopping apart from gas every five mins.... though i do want to put some dba pads on my disco and the end of this might be a good excuse... or maybe i should wait until i can afford the discs too....

Just a question on the side... my wife and I will be driving in a convoy and she wants to follow me... so I was thinking I might want to get the directions right the first time... so, has anyone had experience using a laptop for GPS navigation, I'd love to put one of those in dash systems in but I just dont have a few grand to burn right now :-)
