Got home from Uwharrie and found oil leaking on the caliper and dripping down on the rim. Looks like its coming from behind the rotor. Hub seal? When I take this apart for repair what parts should I replace as maintance items? Any special tools needed? I have a Haynes Manual and it looks like its not too bad to get apart. 1994 D1 140,000 miles.

It looks like you either have brake fluid coming out of a failed caliper, or oil and grease coming out a failed wheel bearing seal. If the grease is oily, that means the inner seals between the grease lubricated wheel bearings and the oil lubricated axle have failed. If so, the whole front hub must be taken to pieces and resealed. Plan on half a day to do that job. Get all the seals and I'd get new bearings at that mileage, including the flat swivel pin bearings

Don't forget the lower swivel bearing also, along with a handful of swivel preload shims. The swivel bearing (lower) is a Timken 11590 and should be available at NAPA.

Peace,
Paul

What ballpark range should all the parts cost? Where is the best place to shop for them? Thanks

Charles:
You're looking at a fairly modest repair here, even if you gold plate it. The swivel seal runs about $8-$10, the paper gaskets are real cheap. NAPA bearings are ~$25.00/each. Use the RTC 3511 axle seal it has two sealing lips and a ridge to insure you insert it the correct depth and can't over insert.

I gave an overview of what was involved in an earlier posting if you need assistance with that part of it.

Peace,
Paul
