Is it me or has anyone else had a difficult time changing fluid in DII transmision? I had the truck in the air, did the gear lube, feul filter, and then set my sights on changing fluid in tranfer case and transmision. I looked for the filler hole prior to draining, (thank God) and could not find a filler hole for either. I don't have the service book, the price put me off and now I am stuck. As a matter of fact I could not even find the drain hole for the transfer case. Please help....-Matt

My first reaction is that if you can't find the filler and drain holes, then you haven't been up under the truck or your truck is dirty as hell. THey're about as obvious as they can be. The AT plugs are smaller hex plugs.

I'd like to know how you did the fuel filter from under the truck in a D2?

Matt
The book may be expensive, but its worth it. Cheaper than 75/hr at dealership(crapshoot). Haynes is cheaper, and much less detailed, but helpful pictures roughly 20 bones.

The filler hole for the transfer case on my DII was visually obscured by the parking brake cable and some dirt. Look, or feel carefully and you'll find it. Right in about the most inconvenient place possible.

Michael, I did not do the fuel filter when I was under the truck, but thanks for the help on the "small hex" nut. I have a DII and I can assure you that no such nut is present on my . The pan has what looks like a drain plug but it is welded or sealed some other way. It will not turn. What I need to know is not how to drain, I will just remove the pan. I need to know how to re-fill the auto box. The only thing on the transfer case that looked like a filler had some sort of sensor in it with a wire running out of it. As for how clean my truck is well it is a 4wheel drive and as sucj it goes off road a lot. I pressure wash the underside at least every two weeks. I can see what I need to see I guess I am just not recognizing it. I ordered the book (Bently) from amazon for $99.00. --Matt

I thought that these trannies did not have provisions to check the fluid and were "Sealed for life".

This is not hell. I have a friend with a '94 Disco that is on its third engine and fourth and second transfer case and he doesn't wheel it. Last weekend, three of us pulled his (this is after two weekeds before replacing the filter in hopes one of the earlier failed trannies would benefit) and worked all weekend just to get the within a 1/4" of being in place and it bound up... Now, all three of us are trying to convince our wives that we do love them and will actually spend some time with them.

Curiously, the one we took out last weekend (a supposed good one from a reputable boneyard) had apparently been leaking 90 wt from the transfer case into the trannie! The surface of the input end of the transfer case had what apeared to be an entire tube of RTV gushed onto it in apparent hopes of stopping what had obviously been a past leak.

That my friends is hell!

Peace,
Paul

Yeah, makes my AT story sound like Mary Poppins meets The Sound of Music. The problem your friend has with his ATs is that he doesn't wheel. Get that truck off-road.

Matt, that plug in the bottom of the AT is the drain plug, it may look sealed, but it shouldn't be. The fill plug is on the pan facing the front of the truck.

The tcase fill plug is at the back of the unit and the drain plug is at the bottom of flat panel.

Michael, if the fill plug is on the pan then how much fluid am I going to be able to get in it. Does it require some sort of pump or something? Thanks for all the help--Matt

Hi Matt
Most Transmission fluid now comes in a squeezy bottle with a long spout, still makes a right stinky mess though!
Best of luck

You'll get no more than 4 qts in it with just a simple drain and fill. Some folks have done the drain-and-fill method over a two or three day period. You see, there's fluid in the torque converter and the AT cooling lines/exchanger.

Michael:
I dump and fill every weekend for three weeks to try to get as much as I can. I figure that by the third time, I have either gotten it all, or diluted the old stuff to the point where it is not an issue for me.

As easy as it is to dump and fill the on the DI, I see no reason not to do it.

Peace,
Paul

I guess I will try the dump and fill method. Should be interesting. Do I re-fill up to where the new fluid just begins to come back out the fill plug? Thanks for all the help--Matt
