For the past three weeks when ever I fill up with gas I will get a check engine light but when it drops down below a 1/2 a tank the light goes out until I refill it then it comes back on. Would a bad gas cap cause the check engine light to come on or would I have another problem maybe with the evap.system. I will not be able to get the codes read until next week(friday)due to wanting to run all of the FI cleaner through it first. Thanks for any help Michael B. |

Probably some other evap problem - quite possibly a gauge sender problem, requiring a new fuel pump. A bad cap generally puts the light on all the time John www.robisonservice.com |

John, my '96D1 throws the CEL with the code 1441 or similar, indicating evap problem. I've checked the valve a bunch of times, and it works. Whenever I check it, I blow it with some stuff when it's open, and reset the CEL. It may not come back on for 10 or 1k miles, but eventually return. Anything else I should be looking for? peter |

my 97 had the code p1496 and it turned out to be the gas cap. the code had to be cleared by the obdII. Have you check to see what code it is? Max |

Peter, Our tester has provision to run evap system tests. That's the best way to find the problem. Usually the caps go bad, or the valves in the canisters under the hood quit. The tanks and hoses seldom give trouble. Without the tester, though, I don't think you can easily test them. OBD II scanners can't access that, but they can read and clear codes |
