HI, Have some decals (put on fairly recently) I wanted to remove from Disco body (to be replaced). They are currently on the body itself , not windows. Whats the best or easiest method for removing them cleanly without of course doing damage to the paint? At first I thought heating the decal with a hair dryer, but then realized that might only help them adhere more. Any help would be appreciated, thanks! |

A hair dryer works but its slow. I used a thing a few weeks ago that attaches to a drill. Its made of some sort of rubber compound. It worked real well. I used it to take off decals on the side of a toyota pick-up. If you looked real close you could see a mark where the tool was used, but I bet wax would cover it up. I re-painted the truck so it did not matter to me. |

Thanks for your reply and suggestions. WIth the hair dryer, I guess the only option wuld be to heat up the decal as hot as possible and try pealing each piece bit by bit. Is that the idea? Also if you can think of the name or description of the rubber compound that you mentioned attached to an electric drill, that would be appreciated and helpful. Thank you again |

I've used a product called "Goo-b-Gone" I think it's citrus oil based and can be purchased damn near anywhere. I think I bought it last at Lowes or HD. Basically you squirt it on and it breaks down the adhesive. Won't harm the paint or leave a mark. |

get what you can off with the hair dryer, any adhesive left over on the paint can be taken off with PPG acryli-clean DX330, prep-solv, pre-kleeno etc... availible at your auto paint and body supply store. Paint will be safe. It takes of any wax thats is on your paint as well. So you'll need to re-apply that...if required. |

Dave, I've always used a hair dryer to remove decals from my vehicles - factory, dealer and previous owner-applied. It is a slow process, but worked the best for me. ~Art Vigil |

Be careful, every decal you take off will cost you about 5 H.P. |

back in the old racin days, there was a spray in product that was designed to remove the decal, glue and nothing else. i cant remember the name but competition accessories in springfield, ohio did sale it at one time. you may check with a body repair supply company they would have it. i discourage the hair dryer, if you are like me you could end up with a bald spot. All of the decal and pinstriping places use a heat gun to remove stickers. It's just a souped up version of a hair dryer. I used to do decals on cars in high school (late 80's) and used 3M adhesive remover to take off the old goo after I peeled the decal off. Don't waste you time trying to baby it off. Just get it off as quick as possible then use the 3M product (if it still exists). |

If 3M's adhesive remover is as bad ass as their adhesives it should work great. |

Naa Carter, your original suggestion is faster and better. Maybe even an angle grinder. Hmmmm. |

Hi All, Thanks to everyone for their helpful suggestions. My main concern was how to begin to remove the majority of the sticker. Once that was done, I'm somewhat familar with the various peoducts to remove rejmaining adhesive. I certainly don't want to ruin any of the Disco's pint surface. So I guess my initial option is to hold a hair dryer inches away from the sticker and heat it up for a few minutes and while doing so, try pealing as much of the sticker away as possible? Something tells me large pieces of it (the sticker)are going to hold on tenaciously while tring this, but I'll give it a go and see wht happens. Again appreciate everyones help! |

Be careful of actual adhesive sticker stripping sprays at the auto shop... would go a much more gentle route than one of those. But, for what it's worth, those heavy-duty decal removal sprays work utterly amazingly. I took the entire (chipped) 'Laredo' factory decals off a Jeep CJ7 many years ago using one of those sprays (expecting to have to redo all the paint anyway). The decals just crumpled up and slid right off... the paint was pretty alright underneath. Amazing. Still.. for a vehicle that has a pricey otherwise good paint job, would try other solutions first, or spot test, spot test, spot test first. |

Thanks, I didn't know there was adhesive striping sprays. I guess they may only be available at a stort that caters to auto body painting and refinishing (as opposed to a place like "Autozone" etc.). It probably works by attcking plastic, so if removed from paint quickly enough, may leave the paint relatively unharmed. I'll have ot look into this kind oif spray and like you said....spot test...spot test..etc. |

apply anything with oil...vegetable oil, peanut butter, etc. or you can buy the Goo-Gone as mentioned above. They now make a special kit to do what you are wanting called StickerLifter: http://www.magicamerican.com/products_gg.shtml (it's the next to last one) |

Cool and thanks for the "link". I do though wonder if this product as well as other similar adhesive type removers only work once you've pealed most of the front surface of the sticker away, leaving just the remains of the thin paper or adhesive backing of the sticker on the body of the vehicle......Then using the "goo gone" and scraper to remove whats left? |
