I had some water seep into my D2 and now I'm worried about puddles my shopvac might have missed. Anything I should look out for or avoid when I pull the carpeting out? TIA. -Chris |

I have a D1, so this may not be exactly the same... In my opinion, the shop vac will not do the job adequately. The pad underneath the carpet holds too much water. The floor pans are steel, so they will rust. Also, it will start to stink pretty quickly. In Florida, water egress is quite common. I've had the most of the interior out at least 3 times. I can have everything behind the driver's seat out in less than 30 minutes. I start by removing all the black trim strips in the door footwells and the black trim strip for the cargo area. I then flip up the rear seats and remove the 8 bolts that secure them in place. Next, I remove the seats and then the carpet (and pad) for the cargo area and the rear seats. I do not remove the rear seat belts. The carpet pretty much just pulls straight up. Next, I pull up the front carpet as well as I can. The first time I did this, I cut the pad underneath to make it easier to remove the carpet pad under the front seats (without having to remove the center console). I cut the carpet as it starts to run up the tunnel (center console). I cut it about 2" from the bottom. Then I carefully remove the pad and take everything out to dry. Sometimes, I use my carpet cleaning machine to clean the mud out of the carpet at the same time. At first, I used to tape the carpet pad for the front seats (where I cut it) when I put it back in. After the 3rd time of doing this, I just stopped. I don't think taping the two pieces of pad back together actually helps. I hope this helps! Thanks, Mike B. |

Thanks much Mike. It helps alot. The stink has set in and my windows are covered with water vapor in the morning. You hit it right on the head. The shop vac misses alot. I also lost the use of my radio. I think I'll replace the speakers and amp with marine equipment. Oh! I was thinking of removing the carpet permanently, but I'm worried of losing the "insulation" effect it gives me. Anyway, I can always put it back in, right? -Chris |
