I have "Side Steps Deluxe" on my 1998 LSE Disco and on one of the side steps, the rubber molding has been removed. The rubber that's missing is on the passenger side of the truck. Would like to see if I can purchase the rubber molding, because rust is starting to show because
there
is no rubber molding to protect it.

Let me know if you can help...

Yeah most of us love them right on to ebay. Except Thom, he keeps them on there and pretends they are sliders. There now maybe he will crawl out of his cave and speak to us for once :-) :-)

Screw it, I should just take them off then if I can't find the rubber molding. Because rust is starting to show.

If they rust, why do they call them deluxe?

That's LR's description. Think I am going to take them off and the hell with them. I called a number of LR parts stores and got no love.

Erik,
Have you thought of taking the rest of the rubber off and having them Line-Xed or Rhino-Lined? Just a thought

I thought that it was mentioned in the 2005 Spy Shots thread that running boards weren't cool. I plan on taking mine off now because it is very important that I remain cool (or at least work on being cool).

Brendan,

It turns out that the 2005 spy shot thread was full of inacuracies. Running boards might be cool but not nearly as cool as the submarine capability of the RR.

I guess I'm just not "cool", i like the looks of running boards, who gives a shit what anyone else thinks if you like it? Trying to give an honest suggestion.

Garrett, I hear ya. I have to look at it this weekend when I have time and see if it's easy to put on. I have the option to pick the side rubber molding. Heck, if I take them both off, I might save a few bucks on gas.

Erik,
I don't plan on taking my running boards off anytime soon. When/if the rubber does come off i will have them rhino-lined or done by line-x b/c they are convenient and look good in my opinion. I have talked to a few people about doing it now, and they said they can put some kind of stuff where the rubber was before having it rhino lined to make it look like it did. Just a thought.

Where can I find out about "rhino lined"?

You can "rhino line" most items yourself. I've used a product called Herc-u-liner (sp?) and it works great. It gives a very durable finish. It's simply "dabbed" on with a disposable paintbrush. I applied it to the metal behind the plastic rocker panel trim pieces to help prevent rust, and it worked great.

I plan on using it on the bottom inside lip of my doors, where the paint likes to peel.

You can buy industrial paint (ie. stuff you would paint the deck of a ship with) with grit in it to give you the traction. I've done that with garage floors and decks. If all you're doing is just the surface of a running board, it will cost you a small can of paint and a paint brush...an inexpensive way to fix the problem if you want to keep the running boards. Just make sure you prep the surface properly.
