Hello All,

I have just bought a 1999 Discovery Series 1 SD. Since this is the first time I have owned a disco don't know much about the reliability of this disco. Could anyone who owns one please let me know what is costs to maintain one on a yearly basis. My disco has already hit the 135Kmi limit. From the owners manual I gathered I have to service this vehicle every 7.5kmi with major services being done at 30,60,90,120,150 mi. My disco has the high miles as the previous owner put on a lot of highway miles.

My question thereby being:

1. What should I anticipate in repairs and how much should I anitcipate for the cost per year?

2. Is the 1999 Disco Series I SD same as the 98 Disco?

Yes I know I should have asked these questions before I bought the vehicle. I did do some quick research but didn't really find/hear of any flaws with the 1999 Disco Series I SD apart from regular maintenance. Also I got a great deal on it.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I had a '99 SD for a couple of years.... put over 80k on it. I really miss it. Good truck.

Other than routine maintenance, I had little costs. The usual, like fluid changes, brake pads and rotors, plugs (did the wires once, went to Magnecors and they were still on it when I let it go).

Yes, it is essentially a left-over '98... '99 was the transition year, with all of the non-SD models being DII models. The '99 SD is a little more loaded than SDs from other years.... leather, heated seats....

Check the history on it, see if it has had a valve-job done. The 4.0 in the '96-'99 Discoveries is known for having issues with carbon build-up. Sticking w/ quality high-octane gas helps, IMHO.

Enjoy it!

Praveen K,
I own a '96 Discovery with 148k miles on the clock. I purchased it with 90k 1 year and 5 months ago. Maintainance is not too bad for a do it your selfer, which I never was before the Rover. Anyhow, here is a run down of what I've had to do in the past 17 months/58k miles on my own with no dealer involvement, as well as estimated prices;

Replaced ignition switch $100 -
Replaced drivers side power window regulator $70 -
Replaced fan switch assembly $100 -
Replaced alternator w/ rebuilt $125 -
Replaced idler pulley $200 -
Replaced cruise control vaccuum pump $100 -
Replaced rear rotors (can't remember how much rotors where)-
Ok, now the dealer involved stuff; had them replace leaky hub seals up front when I first purchased it and it cost around $500 if I remember correctly, but the dealer I purchased it (non-Land Rover)from paid the bill for me. I exploded the front differential, tore the rear roto-flex all to hell.. had dealer replace front differential, rear rotoflex, repack all bearings, rebuild swivels, etc. $1400 (that one hurt really badly). I've lost two front brake lines as well but that was my own fault. I really don't want to add all this up b/c I will definitely start crying:-) and go trade for that Subaru that I test drove the other day. Good luck, keep DWEB handy and search the archives for questions that have been posted many times.
