I'm thinking of purchasing a 98 D1. I live in Delaware. Can anyone give me some ideas of maintenance cost from the dealer or any repair shop. Trying to get some ideas of maintenance cost, all repairs please.

Paying a shop to do it all - $3,000 per year to keep the truck in excellent shape driving 15-20k miles per year

Can you tell me how the $3000 is estimated? It seems like a little bit high.

To ask another question... how do you think this compares to other vehicles - say, a Jeep? (Or Toyota 4wd, etc. ... just for comparison... I don't recall the usual annual cost of non-LR vehicles offhand.)

Sean how many miles does the 98 have?

I bought a 95 with 149k miles, and I'm just now peaking 154k and I have put in about 1000 for parts into the car.

-300 fuel pump
-100 fuel pressure regulator
-150 shop diagnostic (waste of money and time)
-210 alternator(couldnt rebuild it)
-120 fuel injector servicing (doing this now)
-20 single lug nut(in..sane)
-40 idle air control valve

These are just specific things, not including the general servicing like plugs, wires, distributor cap/rotor, filters.

Check out www.roverconnection.com and get an idea of what replacement parts will cost you versus what they would on another car. There is no doubt that you start spending rover-dollars.

Take a good look though, I wasnt thorough enough with mine, and missed things like a leaking hub, etc.

Given the miles and that it's not unusual to put some money into a used car right after you get it, the tally for Jared's 95 doesn't sound that bad, actually. As long as the repairs/servicing holds for another several thousand miles, rather than being 'pay me $1k for every 5k you drive.'

I agree with you. I would expect to put a couple grands in a used car that I bought to fix the initial problems. My question is whether you are continually putting 3K per 15K miles, or per year. For example, I do not expect to change fuel pump or alternator every year. No one is going to pay 1-2K for fixing a MINOR leak in the engine, at least not me, even though the mechanics might point it out. Why am I paying 2K to pay a minor leak if my car (in good working condition and every leak is fixed) only can sell for 4K?

That's why I found the estimate of 3K per 15K miles unreasonable.

Another problem that I see so far - the one who claims that we need to fix everything for $3K per year is the one who always recommend extended warranty.

I have a friend who just came back from doctor appointment. He complained some minor stuffs to the doctor and the doctor regularly ordered all the diagnosis testing available in the world. The bill usually came out astonomical for the testing and diagnosis. The results are always negative. He is with MediCal, and the government does not verify the bills too much. I had a heated discussion with him saying that the doctor is wasting money for his own boat and big house. His answer is the insurance will pay for everything, and the diagnosis is good for him. I think this is why the insurance rate is so high that no one can afford it privately.

You can easily spend $3k in a year if the car is 5years old and has not had strong maintenance since warranty. If you are going to have a dealer do all your work, you can expect some big bills. (Ex.$780 for front brake job at Dealer). If you do the brakes and rotors yourself maybe $120 if you buy the best parts. If you are not prepared to do at least some of your own maintenance, buy a new one.
