Well, several test drives of used Discos in, I'm noticing some commonalities. I've driven one beautifully put-together older Disco with nothing wrong, but some have issues (these are '94-'97s).

What's the usual reason/repair/cost for these three things I've seen on 2+ Discos?

1. the classic slight engine whine on acceleration (sometimes not so slight)

2. slight idle roughness (just a little flutter...)

3. little lurch into reverse (or sometimes in forward, from stop)

I should mention also there's a ton of wear on the leather on some 94s and 95s I've seen.

ummm I'm just noticing that little lurch into reverse on my 97... I've had it for over a year now..whats happening? how can I fix it? and should I expect my to die on me? also what are the causes and fixes(if any) of the other problems?

Do you mean the clunk or bang when going from R and D when it has warmed up?

I've driven 2 '96's, they both do it and both have low mileage.

I've been lead to believe its drive line slack, but I don't quite understand why it wouldn't occur when its cold too.

Might just need fluid replacement and top ups?

I'm surprised you've seen leather wear... I've been totally impressed with the leather in the ones I've seen. They look just like new even though they probably weren't well taken care of.

Looks like quality stuff to me.

nah, it takes a while for it to go into reverse when I start her up in the morning...I have to like push back on the lever even though its locked into place..

The type of leather seats on which I've seen wear (on those older models I mentioned) are the 'pinhole leather' seats, for lack of a better term, where they're not solid smooth leather but have aerated pinpricks all over... I would imagine smooth leather would be likelier to wear well.

I have had a 95 since a year old and it has always had clank going when put in R, and so do the ones my friends have. I think it is the nature of the beast. I have just started noticing the "whine" you are talking about on acceleration, does anyone know what that is?

It's that whine Gary mentioned that is most concerning/annoying to me. And while these little things do seem pretty endemic to older Discos, it's haunting me a bit that a '94 I drove (presumably routinely cared for with regular Land Rover maintenance) had nada of these things.

Other private sellers have said 'oh they're all like that' or 'what flutter'? (The flutter I'm not going to lay down $8k for unless I know it's readily removable, that's what)

If anyone knows the usual causes/fixes for these sorts of things, it will make me a lot more comfortable considering otherwise good vehicles that I'm currently passing on. Where it might be that they need just a reasonable investment in shoring up/tuning... which I don't mind doing. I just don't want a permanent whiner.

(I spent several months... casually, not everyday... looking for my last vehicle from a private owner... and that ended up being well worth the time, so I expect the same will happen with this search. Actually, it's the last TWO vehicles I bought that has happened with... in the first instance, after checking Auto Trader for my entire geographical region for a time, the perfect vehicle appeared two miles from me, on my regular commute to work... at a dealer no less, with low miles and a sticker that substantially undercut its actual value. It was a lux edition the dealership - another make - hadn't factored in, and it wasn't the kind of vehicle their shoppers were looking for. Bought it on the spot, a stick, and learned to drive a manual transmission literally on that test drive.)

/reminiscing.

The wine is possibly a transfer case wine that is very common. It's apparently related to the mechanics of our full-time four-wheel drive system. I'm pretty lucky, my 96 has a very, very light wine and almost vanishes with road noise. I have known others that are much more pronounced.

The hesitation could be the Stepper Motor. This has been widely discussed, and you can dig up some of the history thru "Search" on this site. It sits just after your air box and can cause a lot of interresting symptoms. Mine was dirty and a few months after getting the truck I started experiencing rough idle and it would actually die as soon as I took my foot off the gas. I pulled and cleaned it (really easy) and haven't had another issue for 30k+ miles. Replacement, if needed, is not too expensive.

I don't have the experience with these rigs that others out here have, but from your discription these would be the first things I would consider.

The whine is (most likely) the belt tensioner baring. Mine was going out, thought it was the alt. baring. Easy way to tell is get a mechanics stethoscope (@ local auto parts store) Put it on the parts the belt touches. When you get to the right baring you'll hear it whine, it will about blow out your eardrums. The belt tensioner baring is easy to replace and can be got at napa. A little hint. When trying to pull the snap ring out that holds in baring, notch a spot with a chisel to pull the ring.
