Hi I just purchased an Alpine CDA9813 for my discovery Series I. Currently I have the oem cassette deck and cd changer in the truck. I did a search in regards to installing an aftermarket radio, but i'm still a bit confused. I'm assuming that the stock system in my 94 is amplified. Does this mean I have to bypass the oem amps somehow? From reading some posts, it sounded like I could just splice and match colors, but from reading other posts it sounded like more work was needed. I also noticed a few people saying a VW harness could be used, but it needed 'modifications', but I can't find what exactly needs to be modified on the harness. Any tips for helping me install this radio in my rover? I had my friend buy it from me on his employee discount so I can't have the store install it under their free install policy, and would rather do it myself anyways. I'm pretty good with this stuff so if someone can basically point me in the right direction and tell me a little in detail what I have to do, i'd so greatly appreciate it. THANKS!! Nadir Ali |

you will either need to bypass the factory amps or purchase something that will lower the volume of the outputs from the amps on the new head back down to line level (I got something like this from crutchfield but can't remember what it was called). The modification I had to make to my VW harness was to splice another wire into the power pin so that it gets the required power to keep presets and stuff saved even when the truck is off. I did need an antenna adapter as well. Sorry if this is pretty vague but its all I really remember. |

Do you remember what wire you spliced into the power pin (like which color wire you went from)? Thanks |

I bought a VW Golf adapter(s) but had to move some some of the wires around to match the OEM harness. http://www.speedminded.com/images/landrover/haynesdiagram22.jpg The memory wire (power even with key off) is normally yellow and the Red is power on with the key. Its been several months since I did mine, but I believe the purple wire is the constant power for memory and the lime green with orange stripe is the power with ignition. Just take a small lightbulb, ground it, and test the wires with the key on and off (Could go all out and invest the $2.99 or so in a test light.) |

If I install it in like that with the VW adaptor, will the speakers still be playing off the oem amp? I purchased some new infiniti speakers and would like them to play off of the Alpine headunit instead of the oem amps. Any tips on bypassing the amp or will the amp automatically be bypassed? Thanks Nadir |

On my 97 disco this is how it is. Left Rear: Black/Orange Neg. Black/Yellow Pos. Left Front: Black/White Pos. Black/Brown Neg. Right Front: Black/Pink Pos. Black/Red Neg. Right Rear: Black/Green Pos. Black/Blue Neg. These wires are found in the wiring harness pluged into the amp on the pass. side kick panel.
The tweeters are tied into the the front door speakers. By wireing the radio up this way the rear subs will not work! Be sure NOT to plug the wiring harness back in to the amp. |
