My 97 Disco 1 will overheat some if I'm sitting still in traffic. If I put it in neutral and gun it a little it settles down. I also noticed after driving it around with no A/C on for about 30 minutes, that when I got out, I didn't hear the cooling fan.

Any test I can do to isolate the fan? I don't have a manual or anything.

Any help is appreciated.

Only time this happened to me was when the a/c condensor etc died....
Assume your a/c is working correctly?
How about your viscous fan?

You can do two things:
Clean and Rod the radiator or buy a new one. My advice is bite the bullet and buy new. Change the t-stat and plan for your water pump next. I would also replaced the viscous fan.

When you know your are going to sit idling for a while turn off the A/C. This helps alot. Good luck.

My '96 did this ALOT last summer until I pulled the t-stat to no avail, then I simply flushed out the radiator and filled with new coolant and the problem hasn't returned yet. This happened last August I believe when it was 90+ every day, but like I said, after a flush it was cool. I've ran it extremely hard over this past week in 80+ degree temps, and the needle hasn't went past the half way mark. Start with the cheap and easy, then progress toward expensive and complicated..

Water pump would be my first guess. Grab the snout of it and feel for play. The next check is the viscous fan clutch. While the truck is cold it should spin freely, when the truck is hot it should lock solid. If these both check out replace the radiator $$$. The final thing is the AC fans, they should kick on when the AC is on (these are the two electric fans in front).

Obviously flush and refill, and wack a new t-stat in for safety.

Thanks everyone. I'll be doing the flush and new t-stat first and check the fans.

Just so I'm straight, the viscous fan is the big one driven by the belt right? Just never heard it called that before.

Can I get the viscous fan clutch at the local part store or do I need to go to the dealer.

OK, I just got home with the temp needle at about 10 o'clock. Jumped out and spun the viscous fan just like I did this morning before work.

Would it be safe to say the fan is toast? It would explain why I have to gun it to get it to cool. That, or my water pump is about to eat it too.

Do you have enough antifreeze in the mix?? While at idle the radiator isn't able to cool as efficiently as it does on the move, and without enough coolant the water in the system will boil.

Gary, Ron was joking.

No viscous fan clutch locks solid when hot, and no fan clutch spins freely when cold. However, you should feel significant difference between hot and cold. I'd say spin the fan and observe how long does it keep spinning - if it's more than half a turn when hot, it is a suspect.
