Maybe just coincidence but after having 98 disco 1 undercoated and engine cleaned truck started revving high (about 2000 rpm) in neutral and in park. Sometimes this will cease and it will run normally. Dealer says all likely suspect parts were interchanged and checked with no solution. Dealer now says that codes for engine misfire are appearing but this has not triggered check engine light. Dealer wants to repair pistons and charge me large. Has anyone dealt with similar problem? Any suggestions

Suggestion: Take your truck to a workshop (other than the dealer) where they work mainly on LR vehicles and save some $$$$$.
I get the feeling from what you posted that the dealer has his hand in you pocket.

Sounds like you have a rich mixture problem that the computer is trying to compensate for. this could mean, among other things, a typical vacuum leak, a bad injector, or faulty plugs/wires. not sure what dealer means by "repair pistons" (unless they are leading up to eventually recommending a complete valve job), but you might check all the basics first (aka - plugs/wires). Does this problem only occur when the engine is cold? If so, you could also have a temp sensor sending bad info to the ECU.

In short, (no pun intended) look for an obvious connection problem with the sensors and plug wires since you describe this occuring only AFTER you cleaned the engine.

This problem will occur sometimes after a long highway drive or when cold as well. It is not a consistent problem. Then it will all of a sudden be fine. Sometimes turning the truck off then on again will resolve the problem.
