This morning my 98 disco (36k) started and then died after 2-3 seconds. It seems like the fuel pump, but I haven't found out for sure. My question is should I take it to the dealer or to an import specialist a couple blocks away? (I've seen LR's there many times) I'm not under warranty, and I'm trying to decide if I should take out an extended warranty now that a problem has occured. (No problems ever before) Also, where is the fuel pump located on D1's? Any advice will be appreciated.

I had the disco towed to the import garage, and I'm trying to find the best prices for fuel pumps. Any suggestions?

If someone would respond it would help me alot and save me $$$. RN has a the pump, harness, and hoses for $261.30. How hard is this to put in?

I have never done it on a Disco, but why go with a LR fuel pump? On toyotas we just got a regular fuel pump and hooked it into the fuel line and wired it up. Depending on what you buy you can get one from 20.00 to 200.00.

You should be able to get a genuine pump for under $200 from Nathan @ Discount Rovers. Changing the pump is a 20 minute job.
1. Remove the trim piece that holds carpet down and peel back about 1 foot of carpet to get to access panel & remove access panel.
2. Unplug electrical connection and fuel lines.
3. Unscrew the ring that holds the pump in place (make sure to clean up the area around the pump so that no junk falls into the tank)
4. Remove pump.
5. Install new pump and do the reverse of 1-3.

Make sure to buy new nuts and olives (compression fittings) with the pump.

Thanks Mike, that's about the same price i've been seing at other places too. Another question is do I have to use a LR pump or can I use an alternative that would be cheaper?

Just so you know, after I put in my fuel pump I overtightened that little ring and when the pump turned on, it made a scraping sound. So FYI if that happens you know what it is.

thanks Jared for the heads up. I'm looking for an extended warranty as I've learned that you simply can't own a disco without one. Any suggestions?

Now a twist in the story- I go to the mechanic this morning to give him my keys, and we walk out to my disco. He opens it and turns it on and it runs fine! He drives it around the lot for a minute and revs the engine. Needless to say I felt like a dumbass. He goes back inside and I then try to start it up and it started and died after 3 seconds- Just like yesterday. Does anyone know what the hell is going on. I would think a fuel pump should last at least 80k miles. Mine only has 36k.

Although I don't even know if the fuel pump is the problem.

If it is a fuel pump, there are many alternative parts that can be had for less than $100. My truck has a fuel pump from a Mazda pick-up in it.

Thanks Paul- But this morning the guy called and said he started it at least a dozen times successfully , but he said it kind of missed on a few attempts. Could this just be wires or plugs thats causing the problem? I've only had the truck for a year with no problems so I'm not familiar with what's going wrong.

Now the guy doesn't know what's wrong, so I'm picking my disco up tomorrow. He claims he can't find anything wrong-I hope he's right. I have 36k, should I change plugs, wires, fuel filter?

fuel filter yes. check to see that you are getting power to the injectors with a test light kit. If not check you relays for fuel management. I doubt it is the pump, but I could be wrong. I would check these other things first.
