I'm going to have about 2 weeks of vacation time this June. I'm in boring St. Louis MO. I have been wanting to take a trip out to the Blackhills SD, western North Dakota grasslands, and western Montana. Lately I have been debating about how smart it would be offroading alone in these locations. I've never been in anyplace where help is out of a couple hours walking distance. I guess I have two questions.

Exactly how stupid is offroading alone in uncivilized locations? I plan to cover the basics in the way of vehicle spares and recovery. Also, I'm not going to be on really hard trails. Yet, I don't want to stick to lame dirt roads.

Any ideas on other more sane ways to spend 2 weeks with my rover? Anyone else have some spare time in June or July?

The old Colorado/Moab trip is always a great choice. There are a ton of folks who would host/join you.

You could always join us paddling to Hudson Bay. We don't get a great deal of offroading done, but we see some great country.

More details are here:

Hey John,

How much would it cost to join you? I was budgeting about $500 for fuel on my trip out to Montana. Do I need my own canoe? Thanks.
