Recently started hearing a knocking/clunking noise from underneath my '96 Discovery. When I accerlate the noise stops, when I lift of the gas it is there. If I lift off the gas and hit the brakes, with some force, the noise stops. I was thinking a u-joint, or something with the brakes. If it was brakes, I would think I would hear it all the time?? Any help would be appreciated. |

I hear a knock as well, sounds like a marble or three bouncing in a plastic box (a little more metallic sounding). It happens around 40 -55 mph, doesn't stop when braking and it is only constant in that speed range. Doesn't seem like a wheel bearing and I don't have any vibrations in the steering. 99 Disco I. |

I was experiencing similar symptoms (knocks when shifting, going over bumps, accerating, decelerating...). Most of it went away after I changed the bushings on the rear axle trailer arms. Easy job to do, only need to find somebody with a press to fit the new bushing in the arm. Lionel 95 D1 (manual, which helped for the diagnosis) |

Mine is coming from the drive train somewhere, but I don't think it is a U-joint, although that seems like the obvious answer. It is ONLY when accerating (even light acceleration) and only between 20-35 mph. Has about the frequency of a rock in a tire tread - speeds up with road speed. And it sounds like a stick lightly hitting the underside of the truck - like when off road. Had it for two years, can't figure out what it is... |

Its a Sollihull quality controller officer trapped in the engine bay/upper suspension. I would take it straight to the dealer for a steam clean. |

I have a similar knocking sound on my car, it seems like its coming from the driveline, but I cannot tell. I took mine to the dealership and they were not able to find the problem they actually told me it might be a problem with the valves??? I did not agree with them since the engine does not make the noise while parked even under heavy loads. The noise appears to be comming from the front axle, if anyone ever finds a solution please let me know |

Yes, it could be your "converters falling apart" - tap on them and the muffler with a rubber mallet or something that won't dent the metal and listen for rattles. That "marbles in a plastic box" sounds just like what my previous Discovery did after part of the converter matrix blew down the pipe into the muffler. That's what made me finally give up and sell the truck, though I later decided it was all my fault for denting various exhaust bits and pieces on rocks... |

Since my original post, the noise has come and gone. For the last week, completely gone. Now wondering if it had to due with moisture?? sounds crazy, but we were having alot of rain when this started, been dry for a couple weeks and no noise. I'm going to try the converter test??? |

That's good news. The noise I was hearing never went away. |
