Greetings,

98 Disco was running a little rough so I decided to tune it up this weekend. Read some info about these particular plugs and decided to try them. Let me tell you, these plugs are awesome...has the Rover running like new. NO GAPPING REQUIRED...that was my biggest fear going in b/c I've never tuned anything in my life. Anyway, have any of you guys tried these? They are a little pricey, but it seems to be worth it. The ride seems smoother....could it be psychological?

Let us know how long they last, I've heard they get gunked up pretty easily. I've used regular bosch patinums in the past with success.

Could it be that the +4's are so much better because your old plugs were totally trashed? Poorly gapped? Worn out?
Try an experiment. Go out and buy some cheapo factory spec plugs, gap them, and install. I bet the truck runs just as good.

The concept of the +4 comes from the W7-DTC plug. This has been factory Audi on their 5-cyl powerplants since the early 80's and is a three electrode plug. They do make a noticable difference over other new plugs. "even over a standard bosch platinum". The AUdi 20v Turbo motors take a Bosch F5DP0R Plug. This plug is around $25 each but has a 60k mile repleacement interval. The center electode is not platinum tipped but is SOLID Platinum. People have tried replacing them with cheaper platinums but the engines do not run well. The electrode on this plus is VERY small. About the diameter of a small needle.
My point is, I bet the +4's will see a difference over a basic cheap plug. Having more options for a spark to pick is always a good idea, as is using a quality and small electrode to maximize spark effectiveness and minimize fouling.
But there is no substitute for simply HAVING NEW PLUGS. Any new plug (of proper heat range) is better than a plug that has failed.
All in my humble opinion of course. :-)

I tried the Platinums (just the normal ones) and have not been impressed. I replaced the old plugs - LONG overdue - and put in 8mm Magnecor wires at the same time. I can really tell a difference when I am looking for some speed around 2000rpm. I would bet this is because of the superior Magnecor wires. But the idle rpm's are all over the place now and it runs rough on start-up. Not happy with them. I would be willing to try the +4's if they were not so expensive, but it seems that a lot of people have been happy with the NGK's or Champions as direct replacements for the factory LR (Champions).

I'm not here trying to defend them. I said this was my first time tuning anything and my purchase had a lot to do with my research and my budget. Who knows, it may start running rough again and if that's the case, I'll try something different. Trial and error people, trial and error.

By the way, my old sparks where just that...old and shot.

I've tried Bosch Platinum plugs and they went to trash after one week - that was on an slightly oil-burning engine.

FWIW, the plugs I have on the disco - I don't even know what they are - have been there for the last 75 thousand miles. Disco hasn't missed a beat, and a stop at the gas pump last night rewarded me with a 17mpg number, for a 290-mile trip, including 85 mph highway ride and 5500 ft climb (and descent) in 17 miles.

R.B., hate to say that, but IMHO Magnecor wires are just as helpful as Bosch Platinum plugs. They are not different electrically from any generic Autolite or Borg Warner set from Autozone.

I have tried the +4's also never had any luck with them. I stick to the NGK's. They seem to work the best for my truck. The +4 worked pretty good on my car but the Disco hated them.
