So maybe I'm getting ahead of myself seeing how I don't even own a Discovery yet, hopefully I'll be getting one this week..but I'm already making some project plans for the summer and would like to make some sort of front bumper.
I'd love an ARB or something similar that replaces the entire bumper assembly but I just can't spend that much and I'd like to make it myself.
I won't have much of a need for a heavy-duty bumper so I was thinking about a simple pre-runner design that retains the OEM bumper like this one:

Does any company make these or would this guy's be homemade?

If anyone has plans to a pre-runner design or can point me to a source then I would appreciate it.

Of course, any other input is welcomed.

TIA,
Adam

It's hard to tell, at first I just assumed that the metal bumper in the pic attached to the stock one but it looks like it may either be a very slick complete aftermarket replacement or else he has trimmed a good bit of the fender lips. Again, it's hard to tell...maybe someone knows what the deal is...

Adam, John @ RoverTym.com can make one like that. I think he calls it a rock bar and it allows him to nudge up against rock surfaces.

you can buy a cheapy bolt on pre runner bumper (as pictured on that LRX link) at pretty much any 4wheelparts or ORW. It really isn't very structural but they cost less than 200 bucks. personally i'd save your money or buy a used ARB here on dweb.

Adam,

I had two bumpers built for a previous truck at shops in Orange County, CA. A good shop should be able to do it, a Super1600 or race-truck shop will do a better job.

Suspensions Unlimited did my original bumper, which was 1.5" (I think) tubing with integrated skidplate tabs and a full motor cage welded to the frame. A lot of guys were running "Downey-style" 3" tube shit back then in the 90's but I always preferred the smaller welded-in pre-runner SCORE look to the bolt-on stuff. They did a single blade across the bottom, with a hoop forward at about a 20 degree angle - pretty aggressive looking. Two struts were sent back through the grill and past the radiator to the integrated motor-cage.

I had a 35 mph rear-end accident with a '95 Thunderbird with that bumper, and it might just have saved my life. Only damage to my truck was a destroyed radiator. I immediately had it replaced with a new install. Total price on that bumper was less than $250 bucks including aluminum plate. I'll try to find a picture of it tonight. For everything I loved about that bumper, I still think it would look entirely out of place on a Discovery.

Cheers,

e
