CAN SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE ME THEIR OPINION AS TO WHY LAND ROVERS DESPRECIATE SO FAST. I'VE OWNED MY 1998 DISCO FOR JUST OVER 3 YEARS AND RECENTLY WENT AND GOT IT APPRAISED. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I DAMN NEAR FELL OVER BACKWARDS. I'VE LOOKED AT THE KELLY BLUE BOOK VALUE AND IT CONFIRMS WHAT I WAS QUOTED. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. ANY THOUGHTS.

Antonio,

Compaire the Disco to any other vehicle and I bet you will find close to the same depreciation rate.

i was going to say the same thing as Brian. Im sure a 98 grand cherokee would be showing the same percentage loss. cars are depreciating assets.. it sucks.

I think because of the track record of the Discovery. Mostly mechanics like to charge up the yang for repairs so the aftermarket demand is low. The reason I bought my used 96 is because of this reason. You get the luxury items for a small price tag. But on the other hand the Discos aren't as reliable as say a Land Cruiser or other Japanese import. If you check out all of the reviews (JD Power, MotorTrend, etc.) you will see that the critics come down hard on Discoverys. This being in part due to it's high new car price tag.

Discos are much worse than most anything out there in its class for depreciation. The D1's being replaced by the DII's and D2.5's just make it worse. That is why my other truck is a Tahoe... I can actually pay it off quicker then it depreciates. Even though a new Disco is MUCH more expensive than a new Tahoe, amazingly mine is worth twice as much as my DII... Go figure.

The reason's are many... Rust, valve problems, leaks, and just general nagging problems that shouldn't exist in a modern automobile. Granted all the different makes have their gremlins, but only LR make it a feature.

Hopefully though, you will be able to you enjoy and keep your Disco for sometime to come (and hense make the value meaningless) ;).

"Even though a new Disco is MUCH more expensive than a new Tahoe"

a base Tahoe MSRP is $34,200... base Disco MSRP $34,995.

Loaded Tahoe with 3rd row,DVD,sunroof, and everything else has an MSRP of $48,709!?!

Loaded HSE7 Disco with DVD has an MSRP of $44,995.

a 50,000 mile 98 Disco, loaded LSE, shows a trade-in of around $13,000.

a 50,000 mile Tahoe pretty loaded has a trade-in of $12,650..

whats the difference???

I have no doubt that your numbers are correct in some sense... However, I bought my new 2002 Tahoe fully loaded with everything but the DVD system for $34K. I tried to buy a new loaded Disco just recently and couldn't get it for less than $39K from the dealer. So endup getting a used DII with 46k miles for much less.

If you really want to test it, go look for a Tahoe for nearly that trade in price (go ahead and add the markup too).... Just a quick look on autotrader and cars.com showed that getting a tahoe for anything close to that price, it would have almost twice the mileage as the 50k figure. And yes I realize that trade in value is much less than retail. You will see cheap (and nice) Disco 1's all over the place but you will not find a cheap tahoe or yukon with low miles.

FWIW... I just did a KBB for both my trucks and they have depreciated by 35% for the rover and only 19% for the Tahoe over what I have paid.

Brian,

???!!

BTW, a 98 LSE with 50k miles is closer to $10-11K on trade in... Not $13k.

Good info. Justin and Gil. My wife has a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Classic that has depreciated pretty bad as well. Anyway, I will just have to remember the good days when I drove my 1996 Honda Accord to death. It was right at 100,000 miles when I sold it for $7,500 to a guy down the street. That's just about how much they appraised my truck for. I still see the Honda every now and then...........you'll have to excuse me, my eyes are watering up.

justin... for the sake of comparing apples to apples i put both a 98 disco and 98 tahoe into kbb with a rating of excellent. Im all to aware of how wrong kbb is, but for examples sake thats where those numbers came from.

"BTW, a 98 LSE with 50k miles is closer to $10-11K on trade in... Not $13k." thats somewhat subjective as it really depends on the truck, 13k is what kbb spit out.. yes, its high, as are all kbb values, like Les pointed out.

I understand your point, but I just bought a 99 Tahoe with 48k for 13,000. Granted, that was wholesale, but my point is that the Tahoe is no more depreciation-proof than anything else with 4 wheels.

Cars are just horrible investments, simple as that.

I currently lease a 2001 Jetta Wolfsburg that I am going to take a big hit on because I lease it and now took a job that will put me overseas. Because of the current resale value of a car like this, outright selling it is almost unthinkable because of the difference in the residual value. It's NUTS

those damn Toyota 4Runners and Land Cruisers do seem to hold their value well. been watching them at the auctions lately and they bring in some big coin. '00 JGC with a 4.0 are averaging $13K. (wholesale) the big trucks in general are taking a hit. but then again it is getting passed along to the used car buying in many cases.

Yeah, I looked on E-Bay and its' pretty pithetic how much some of these guys are selling Land Cruisers for. something like 96's with 80-95k miles for $15k. And to overpay for a 4runner would be a joke and a half. Anyway- the killer for LR's is the mods that don't get back any money when selling the truck.

Everybody is missing the point. I just had two very cute girls walk by my friends tricked out VW to tell me how much they liked my Land Rover.

So let's do the math......

'96 Disco - $9000

1 year worth of parts to keep the damn thing on the road - $9000

1 year of oil, grease, and ATF - $1000

Two really cute highschool girls that would not normally talk to my fat ass come up and tell me how cool my buggy is - Priceless!

The lawyer that has to bail your fat ass out of criminal charges because you were fucking around with underage high school girls (assuming that you are not underage yourself): $18k (2-'96 Discos.)

The psychiatrist fees that you will pay because you actually CARE what high school girls think of you or your cool buggy (can you say "cha-ching"?)

just messin.

I'm not a perv, but I'm also not blind. The point of the story is Land Rover are differant. People know they are tough. You'll see 25 other 4X4 on the road to 1 disco. I had a very nice lady get out of her new Mercedes suv to come look at my '96 disco because she had never seen one up close. When I ware this one out I'll get another one. It just won't be a 2005 with IFS.

If you want a Land Rover that holds their value (at least in the US), get a 110 or 90. My local dealer had a 110 last year (48k miles) that sold for $59K!!!! The sticker on that sucker back in 93 was only around $39K!

Sorry, I read "VW bug" and "resale" so I had to throw this in:

My first car was a '71 bug (bought in '86) in which I paid $1000.

I kept it for 3 years, drove it from Texas to California once, and sold it with 177,000 miles on the original motor for $1500.

go figure?

Kai
