I just bought a 96 Disco and it has two small problems that really annoy me. First, the rpm gauge jumps up and down. For example, if i should be at around 2000 Rpm, the gauge will jump up and down from around 1000-3000. My other problem is my dome light. When I open the doors, the dome light flashes like a strobe light. It doesn't matter what door i open either. Any Ideas? Thanks. |

Probably a failing voltage regulator or stator short on the alternator for the tachometer problem. dunno bout the dome light.

I AGREE WITH MIKE, THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR ON THE ALTERNATOR MIGHT HAVE GONE BAD. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET ONE AT AN ALTERNATOR SHOP FOR ABOUT $20. ON ANOTHER NOTE, DOES THE DOME LIGHT SHINE STEADY ONCE THE DOORS ARE SHUT? |

No, the dome lights seem to flash about 4-5 times in an even pattern, and then they turn off. I can however, manually turn them on and they work fine. |

These alternators have an internal voltage regulator. Mine was doing the same thing. It was due to a loose wire on the alternator. Look at the smallest of the 3 wires connected to the alternator. Try to wiggle it. If it is loose, pull it and re-crimp the metal on the connector. Apply some dielectric grease to it and put it back on. That fixed my problem. Hope it will fix yours. Don't know about the dome light. Have you checked the connection? Is the bulb loose? I would pull the lught and look for loose connections. |

All the dome lights flash at the same time, the one by the mirror, and the 3 in the back, so I'm pretty sure its not the bulbs, I don't know where to start looking though |

MARK I KNOW THE LIGHTS FLASH WHEN YOU OPEN THE DOORS. DO THE SAME LIGHTS FLASH AFTER YOU LOCK YOUR DISCO. I.E SIGNALS,SIDE LIGHTS AND BRAKE LIGHTS. |

My dome light does this sometimes. Most of the time the light will not work if the switch is turned off and the drivers door is open. The light will work with the door open if the swich is on. |

The lights only flash when I open the doors. When I lock it, the exterior lights will flash three times like I think they're supposed to, but the interior lights do not. |

Replace f10 or f12 fuse for the dome light problem. |
