I just recently lost my cv-joint on my 96 Disco.
When I bought it, it had the grease in it that the D-90's have in their housings. It seems that the seal allowed water to be sucked into the housing when it got hot. It makes sense that if there's that much open volume in the housing and the seal goes that it will happen. I drained about a cup of H2O out of it. Long story short the bearing and ball was shot. I had both sides rebuilt and replace the lube with 90 wt. oil that the dealership denies belongs there. It makes sense to me that if it's filled to the top that you won't suck any water into the housing, and if and when the seal goes you'll know because you will see the oil leaking out; right? anyway my ABS system is shot now. It has been shimmed and reshimmed and still the ABS goes into effect when it's on dry pavement; I almost put it through the garage door today. It doesn't always happen but it does at the most in-opertune times. Could the sensor be shot or should I take all the shims out?
Any help is greatly appreciated. BEWARE to check this out on your truck and make the decesion to have the right lube in there before it cost's you the $ that it cost me.Disco

You know Jeff, just recently I have noticed that my ABS will come alive at frequent, random times, and I am puzzled by it too. Don't want to hijack the thread, but does anyone know why it would just all of a sudden start working when it's not supposed to?

It's because of the distance between the sensor and the groved plate that pick's up the magnetic field, which turns on the ABS system, when it senses the wheel slipping (I think). The real question is what happens when a sensor starts to go????? Does the ABS stop working or is it the oppisite, that the system just works when it wants to? I pulled the fuse so that I don't put it through the garage door or worse total the truck which almost happened last week. Mine has gone to the Dealer and they supposedly fixed it, but the light still comes on and I still have the problem. Don't know what to do next.

I recall reading a thread, may be in the archives of how to test the abs sensor to determine if the sensor is bad or not.

The abs on these trucks sucks, pure and simple. I pulled the fuse after going through the same thing. The brakes work better now without abs, imho. I drive in the snow alot and the braking is so much better without the abs. You can just lock up the brakes and get a nice easily controlable slide. Works way better than the crappy abs.
Dont get me wrong, I like abs, all my cars have had it. It's just that on other cars the abs actually improves braking performance. Not so on the disco.
FWIW, Dan

More than likely you have a ABS sensor or more that are going bad, if you want it fix and the dealership cannot tell you something is wrong than I don't know what to tell you, but if you want a quick fix pull the fuse in the engine compartment, that fuse controls the pump. Once the fuse is gone the ABS pump does not activate at all.
