It all started when I couldnt get my 97 disco out of park. Well, that caused the anti-lock light to stay on. A friend reached under the brake pedal and jiggled something which then enabled me to put it in drive. Yeah! The problem is the anti-lock light now stays lit all the time and you can put it in gear w/o having to put your foot on the brake first. Also, the brake lights including the one on the window on the back door stay on all the time I am driving.(not safe) Also my check engine light was on for a week, went off for 3 days, on for one and now off again. Whats up? Any suggestions? I know this was a long drawn out text, but needed to tell you everything in hopes of getting an accurate diagnosis. Thank you

He bypassed your brake light switch to get you home. Got to fix the switch. I have been lucky and not had mine go out on my disco, but had my cruiser switch go bad. If the brake lights don't light up the switch will not let the gear shifter move out of park. I do not know if you can open up the switch and fix it or if you will have to buy a new one. You may find a napa part number somewhere in d-web. If not take it off and run down to the parts store and see if they can find something close. I have had good luck doing that.

Thanks for responding. I am in the process of ordering a new brake light switch. It was suggested to me that an auto wrecking yard could have one and that I could get it for $20. Land Rover has one at the dealership for $44. Is that switch really something you can get at a wrecking yard? Thanks again for your suggestions.

THIS JUST HAPPENED TO ME A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO. REPLACING THE BRAKE SWITCH WILL SOVLE YOUR PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE LIGHTS AND CAUSE YOU TO APPLY THE BRAKE TO TAKE THE DISCO OUT OF PARK. ONLINE THROUGH ATLANTIC BRITISH YOU CAN GET A SWITCH FOR $26. YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO GET A BRAKE SWITCH IN A JUNK YARD. BE CAREFUL NOT TO BRAKE THE PLASTIC BARBS(CLIPS)THAT HOLD THE SWITCH IN PLACE WHEN REMOVING. AS FAR AS THE ANTI LOCK LIGHT I AM STILL TRYING TO SOLVE THAT PROBLEM. LR SAID THAT IT WAS TRIGGERED WHEN THE BRAKE SWITCH WENT OUT. THEY CAN RESET IT FOR ABOUT $50. HOWEVER, THAT WILL BE A LAST RESORT. I AM GOING TO TRY DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY FOR ABOUT 1 MIN. TO SEE IF IT WILL RESET. FYI-I HAD NO LUCK AT NAPA OR KRAGEN AUTO PARTS GETTING A BRAKE SWITCH.

Thanks Robert, let me know if disconnecting the battery solved the reset problem. I will look into Atlantic British Parts also. I am in the process of ordering a switch now. Another discoweb member suggested Nathan Crabtree @ Discount Rovers 1-502-8rovers. He said they were reasonable. PT Schram was the member and he is the President of an independent Land Rover Repair,Service and Assembly Business. Look for his name on the site, sure sounds like he could be very helpful also. Thanks for responding.

MICHELLE
DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY DID NOT WORK FOR ME. I'LL KEEP LOOKING INTO IT.

When my ABS light was on I foung the wire right about the rear diff was un-pluged. There is a connection there. You might just look at it.

I still can't figure this one out either. Had the same problem, replaced the brake switch and the ABS light is still on. I'm pretty sure it's not related to anything else because it came on just one drive before the brake switch went out. I've just learned to ignore it.

What does the LR dealership do to reset it?
