I got an estimate to fix the rust in the rear door jams of my 98 Disco. This is from a body shop I have used in the past. He told me this is to do it right. I was just wondering how this compared to what anybody else paid.

The LR corrosion warranty for the disco is 6 years, 100K miles (not too sure about the miles part). You should take it to your dealer, maybe it hasn't run out yet. I'm getting the same done to mine in LR Paramus. I'm just waiting for a schedule since I would need a loaner car for this.

BTW, mine is a 99D1

Just had mine done, a 97 right under warranty deadline. Here is the scoop...

The dealer has to "authorize" the work first. This is not so simple even though your car may still be under warranty. The dealer will verify that you have had your annual rust/body inspections, etc. Incidentally, this is not even listed in the maintenance guide that came with my vehicle. I was rather shocked that the dealer/LRNA questioned my vehicle's maintenanc record since my vehicle has a reserved spot at the dealer's garage because it is there all too frequently.

Despite my numerous visits, they initially gave me some grief. LRNA rep had to come in to look over and then I had to get an estimate from the dealer's body center across town. After the estimate was given to LRNA, they had to evaluate it to see how much they would cover and what I was on the hook for. With some pressure they covered everything -- BTW, I had this rust issue fixed a few years back and it returned within 1 year; that is why I gave them extra grief

Also, LRNA will NOT cover the cost of a rental under the "rust" warranty. Try to see if they will, I had no luck.

All told the process took a few months, so schedule it before your warranty expires.

My 97 did the same thing. Cost me less than 300.00, at a local body shop that has done other stuff for me. I was told in time it would probably come thru again due to where the seam and wheelwell meet. Must be a common bug. Not that I've got $ falling out of my arse, but I couldn't deal with fighting with my nearest LR dealer over this, the closest one is almost 50 miles.

Or you can get a new set of wheel arches. You probably still have to fix the pilar section:

The only way to do it right is if the body shop replaces your entire vehicle for a new one :-)

Actually, the body shop will really have to do major surgery to guarantee that ALL the rust (visible and hidden) is removed by replacing metal, not just sanding, treating, and painting.

I had this job done twice. The last one very recently. The first job lasted about 1 year.

I own a body shop and also own a 98'. 700.00 seems fine as long as the shop is doing it right, 300.00 seems like a patch and paint job that will rust out within a year. Although the job is going to be done "right", you can still expect rust to show within a few years anyway in the same spot, it just depends on your particular LR. Ford F-150's are famous for rusting over the wheel wells on the bedsides but not all did. We have a 91' we use as a beater with 150,000 miles and there isn't one spot of rust on the truck...it just depends on which one you get.

I took my 97 to the dealer last year. Had no problems getting them to fix my rust. It took a while (almost a month) but it was fixed free of charge to me. YOu might want to try that.
